That is RIDICULOUS!

No wonder why aviation is dying. I thought $85 for a cap was outrageous. The plane I bought has generic non-PMAs, but I doubt the previous owner cared since they were under a wing cover and at a private airpark. I'd like to get the original ones, but not at that price

Get used to it... I paid $127 for the static port drain, $350 for the ram air boot, the list goes on and on...

An unimproved fuel cap can be dangerous. A friend changed the cap on his Aeronca and it wasn't vented right and he lost the engine. You could also run out of fuel if a vented cap siphons fuel out.

I got a pair of the wag-aero part number E-333-000.  http://store.wagaero.com/product_info.php?products_id=1918  Still have my invoice.  They were 35 each at the time, but it looks like the price has gone up to 41.50.  They fit fine.

I just ordered a pair. One of them barely fits with the cam spun all the way down, but then it requires two hands to engage/disengage. Even then its a tad loose and I can still pull it out. The other side wont even spin down far enough to hold.

By my measurements:

Wag Aero Caps- 1-7/8" = 1.87in

I took a micrometer to my fuel port and they are roughly 2.08in diameter. I found Shaw's website and they have 37 different shapes and sizes. (Including the 1-7/8" caps I just bought, prices are much cheaper than Wag Aero or Spruce). I found 2.00in caps, which should give me a firm fit with loose cams instead of sinching down the undersized caps all the way and having to fight and get them off.

Of course this is all for my airplane which does not fly, so this is just my $0.02. Will give an update when they get here.

Using Gary's idea above^

Consider the junkyard route to get SS fuel neck with the modern fuel cap.

Requires drilling out the old rivets, and cleaning off the old sealant, and replacing.  The results could be worth it.

My 65 C fuel neck parts were made of mild steal and rusted.

Stainless parts are probably available through the expensive channel if you can't find them used.
