My windshield is old, like as old as the plane, and needs to be replaced.  I have someone to replace it but I need to get the material.  Does anyone know where to get the best value for a new windscreen for a 74 F?  Thanks for your help.

Great Lakes Aero does a nice job at a reasonable price. Just do a search for Mooney Window. I was very happy with the quality and service for side windows last year. We went with SC gray and like the color. You can see examples in my photo albums where we did the rear window mod last year.

Side note, it will cost more but if you are doing it you might consider going to a 201 window in the process. Only game in town now is LASAR so a little expensive but that is the route I plan to go when we replace the front window on our 75F.

I'd love to do the 201 mod but I don't think that is in the cards.  I actually have the person to do the installation but I'm looking for where to get the windshield itself.

I wouldn't do the 201 windshield on my F mode. Just my opinion. The 201 windshield is designed for the baby hands access panel. Most panel back access in the 201 is accomplished by sliding the panel out; whereby the same access on the F model is accomplished through the reasonably sized access panels ahead of the windshield. So a 201 windshield on an F model results in a substantial reduction in accessibility behind the panel. You'll find yourself trolling the kindergartens for 5 year olds to reach into the baby access panels.

You're thinking of the SWTA 201 lookalike windshield mod. The factory parts used in other 201 windshield conversions eliminates the access panels and the reason they are there in the first place, to access radios damaged by water leaks.

Access to radios is the same overall, but is done from inside the plane.

Although not any longer available I installed one of the last SWTA 201 kits sold.  The corner opening is plenty large for me to get my hand in. I've been able to remove the starting vibrator this way which is almost dead center.  You can also remove a couple of the radio trays or slide out the engine monitor if you need better access to the center area.  If the trays are mounted with nutplates or rivetnuts it only takes a few minutes to remove the tray and leave the back plate and connectors in place.  This opens up a large area to work through and only adds a few minutes to the job.  Probably less than properly resealing the original access panels.

The access panels are very important. You open them at annual to change the vac filter, clean contacts on relays, etc. I probably access the access panels as often as I decowl the engine. Never had a problem with water leaking, but I replaced the seals 10 years ago so its not a problem for me.

In the F model there is no access to the back of the trays with out the access panels aside from laying on the floor and looking up or trying to reach down with the glare shield removed.
