I just ordered the IRs for both sides from Alpha.  They were nice enough to give me the 2012 prices.  Anyone have photos of the install?

So do you think the reel can be used as a hand hold on the right side? We're having an airport lunch gathering on Sunday the 13th, small local group. You're welcome to join us.

The problem may be the plastic cover.  It will come off pretty easy.  They are comfortable in flight.  I'll see about Sunday, I have a few things I need to finish up.

The plastic cover coming off is a major problem. I solved it by wrapping two nylon wire ties around each end, which took care of the problem immediately. However, even with the cover solidly in place, I don't beleive it to be a suitable hand hold.

For the guys with the PVC pipe, can you post a picture? I'm sure I can design/build my own but why reinvent the wheel. Thanks!

As soon as I'm back near my plane, I'll get a picture of it.  Its very simple and about a 5 min. project.  I'm away at work for a few days so hopefully will have it by early next week.

just a FYI. The Inertia Reels that AmSafe builds today, are not like the old ones that so many of you are used to. They are very well built, last a lifetime, are set up to not have the issue with locking up when they are not supposed to, and are maintenance free.

Richard,

How much work does it take to install a set for the front seats?

This is Paula from Alpha Aviation.

It really is a pretty straight forward installation.  As noted above, from time to time the pilots side can be a little tougher, but not impossible in 99.9% of instances!

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW

The shoulder strap upper attachment points are created adding MS27405-6 clamps to the fuselage tubing structure adjacent to and aft of each pilots outboard shoulder.

The design of the shoulder strap upper attachment is similar to that provided by Mooney on M20J aircraft; Serial numbers 24-001 thru 0083 and 24-0085 thru 0629. The installation is accomplished through the installation of the attachment hardware to the existing 4130-chrommolly-fuselage frame, without modification.

This installation is considered by the FAA to be a MINOR CHANGE and requires no FAA approval. See FAA – Policy Statement ACE –00-23.561-01; Dated September 19, 2000.  If you'd like a copy of this, please email me at paula@alphaaviation.com and I'll shoot one over for you.

Our MOONEY REPLACEMENT/UPGRADE page includes photos, installation overviews, etc.

Does anybody not have shoulder harnesses still?

Life is short, don't allow it to get shorter...

It's a low cost, easy install, upgrade to the beloved machinery...

The reals and buttons also improve copilot's opinion of old machinery...

If you don't mind me asking, what were the 2012 prices?

I'm about to order some myself. Still unsure if I want to IR or fixed.

Kurt,

I just received the harnesses in the mail.  They look great.  I do not have installed yet so take with grain of salt - I would suggest the IR for the left seat.  I also ordered the IR for the right, but still unsure if I would have preferred the fixed.  The Wife (Commander in Chief) rides in the right seat so thought I better go with the IR.  The belt does not fully retract into the IR housing, remains extended six inches or so.  I will install during my annual in a couple of weeks.

Paula,

Thanks for offering up the 2012 prices.  I will have my mechanic help with the install so hope it goes smoothly.  I would like to have more photos of the installation process if any are available.

Thanks again.

Tom

Although I do not have a shoulder belt, I do have the the PVC stick to turn the fuel selector valve because even w/o the belt is a pita to switch tanks.  In any case I fully subscribe to Scott's comment, engine failure at low altitude on take off, nose down and look for a place to land.  If at my home airport in Virginia I know I will survive.

Depends on how much room the boys in Kerrville left you around the tube.....

Note to Paula - it would be awesome to have the nut welded or brazed to the clamp...... just sayin'

Thanks Tom. I want to IR for the pilot side, but I'm just wondering if that big IR reel will get in the way on the passenger side when rear passengers are boarding and deboarding.

I had the same concern.  I discussed with Paula and she does not believe it will be an issue.  The reel is smaller than I was expecting, so hopefully its out of the way.  I have the pleasure of inserting a car seat in the back from time to time, so that will be the test...

I mentioned your suggestion to Don and he thought it was a good idea... he'll think on how to make that happen!

We haven't had anyone call to tell us it was in the way.  I did see the posts about the plastic cover coming off.... I'll mention it to AmSafe and see if they have any suggestions on that.

In my case, the cover comes off because of the angle at which the belt comes out of it pushes the cover up and it gets unlatched. The solution is to cut the plastic back about 1/4" I think. I haven't done it yet, but it's getting closer to the top of the list of things to get done on the plane. In the mean time, I've given up on trying to keep them on, so they're on the bench in the hangar. Maybe since this is an active thread, I'll get to it this week and report back.

Hey Dave - I'll take your thoughts to AmSafe and see if they have any thoughts on the cover.

A suggestion on the Inertial Reel Covers popping off;

In talking with Don about it this morning, he said he ran into that once and what he did was "washer it out".  What was happening in the situation he ran into was that the royalite surround was preventing the cover from securely snapping into place.  The space was too tight.  He added a couple washers so that the reel was sitting slightly above the surround and the problem was resolved.

He also said that the cover could easily be trimmed using a dremmel tool if the opening is not big enough.  I am working with AmSafe to see if there is a fix there.
