I am getting an avionics upgrade which entails putting an HSI in place of my DG, well there seems to NOT be enough room for the HSI in the spot where the DG is now so the only thing I can come up with is to have it installed slightly off center to the right because of the interference of the knuckle where the yoke goes through below the bottom row of insturments.

Only other thing I can think of doing is to have a new panel cut out and the quote I got was NOT to my liking. Suggestions?

Getting a new panel cut is the way to go. Most quality avionics shops have the equipment to do it. The bigger cost will be the labor to pull everything and get it mounted in the new panel. I suspect if not a lot of work has been done on your original panel, you will probably encounter some challenges behind the panel (wires with deterioting sheaths, chaffing, etc.) that will need to be addressed.

It does always amaze me that manufacturers did what they did years ago.

On my last one , I canted the gyro up about 3 degrees to clear the end of the yokeshaft, but it was a sandel , so the tilt didnt matter, the other alternative is to swap it out with the altimeter...
