But with AdLog, there is a paper trail that can be transported from shop to shop.

My previous IAs all gave me a printout every year of every possible AD, with either reasons why it didn't apply, or when it was complied with and how. This was invaluable when I relocated, and again a few years later when my new IA retired and I had to find a new shop.

Absolutely.    People should always ask for the AD list as a deliverable from an annual inspection, even if it's just to confirm "no new applicable ADs found" on the next inspection.

I expect everybody here knows this already, but...     The owner or operator must keep the AD list up to date.   You might pay someone else to do it, but it's on you to make sure it's done.   As far as I can tell, doing an AD search isn't a required part of an annual inspection in part 43.   You just have to keep in compliance with all of them.

91.417 (Maintenance Records)

(a) Except for work performed in accordance with §§ 91.411 and 91.413, each registered owner or operator shall keep the following records for the periods specified in paragraph (b) of this section:

(2) Records containing the following information:

(v) The current status of applicable airworthiness directives (AD) and safety directives including, for each, the method of compliance, the AD or safety directive number and revision date. If the AD or safety directive involves recurring action, the time and date when the next action is required.

You would think that, but I think that the shops aren't really looking up, recurring AD's and they  aren't tracking the old ones, and the owners don't want to pay for it anyway so they're happy to go along with it.

actually it depends. I would have to look up my initial for the Mooney. 
 

it depends on some things like what size binder you request
