A bit sporty this past Wednesday climbing over Knoxville on my way to St Louis. Thar's ice in them thar clouds! I was able to maneuver around most of the broken and overcast to avoid it.

I didn't get any pictures but the trip home Thursday afternoon was just as, if not more, fun. It's that time of year.

And the winds weren't my friend either. They only got worse the higher I went. Although the trip home on Thursday saw 200+ all the way. All in all a good trip!

I don't know about you, but for me the photos always look so much more benign than when you're actually up there... manoeuvring around them... Were you VFR?

No, I was IFR. I asked for a block altitude 6000-8000 and deviations left and right of course and they gave me the clearance. So I cloud surfed for almost an hour avoiding the ice.

And yes, the pictures don't do it justice. The dark spots look a lot darker in real life.

and next time he sees that beautiful of a scene, maybe he should turn 90 degrees and frame it with the wing in it instead of the cowl?   i just think a Mooney wing would look amazing with that background!

When it's that dark, the wing doesn't show up well. At least, not at 9000 feet.

Agreed. The field of view required to capture the wing seems to make the colors a bit less dramatic

Hmmm, you guys are right, the cowl is shining pretty good… maybe you need more wax on the wings!

Flying into the sunrise started just black and became a steadily changing reflection on the cowl starting as faint glowing line of white reflection in the shape of the cowl outline.  The view out the side window in the dark has reflections of the panel and I'll have to bring a black screen or something to shield the cockpit lights from reflecting next time.

It's always amazing to watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets...all different and just change so quickly.  Pretty cool to see the views that only can be seen out the front of an airplane though!

You people that fly at night a lot definitely get some cool views.   I very, very rarely fly at night, so those cool photo ops rarely happen for me.   This sunrise headed toward Tucson from Phoenix did happen, though, which was nice.   Not a Mooney, but was still cool.

Hitting the west coast of Michigan at 15k. For anyone familiar with the area, Silver lake and the Silver lake sand dunes are clearly visible!!

Here's my sunset pic passing Chattanooga Tuesday night. I didn't realize it when I took the pic but the aileron trailing edge is reflecting the sunlight. Kinda cool, looks like I have LED edge lighting.

I like when the light angle is low and it highlights how the lift pulls the upper wing skin up and makes it look inflated.   I had one like the other day when heading out fairly early.

While my destination was nothing special, the picture came out pretty cool bc the camera happened to sync with the beacon.

It’s great to see my little contribution to the great space that is Mooney with the continuation of the today’s flight threads starting each year. I can’t remember what year I started this but still take time to read about all the great stories of Mooney flying.  Here is my contribution to sunset and the Mooney wing.  Merry Christmas to you all

Winter trip to Colmar (LFGA), Mooney was doing 172kts ground speed on +1200fpm while on cruise climb at 120kias, it’s cold and windy, the air was crisp
