Tim-37419 Posted August 27, 2023 Report Posted August 27, 2023 I’m generally not a CB but feel like I should try to repair this before replacing. The Internet claims acrylic glue will do the job. What does mooneyspace say? And yes, that is our dining room table. Since it broke while someone was trying to get the sun off of their iPad so they could color instead of listening for handoffs and working the radio, I don’t feel bad about putting it on the table. I mean, it is on a placemat… Quote
EricJ Posted August 27, 2023 Report Posted August 27, 2023 Worst case get another piece the same color and cut a new one using that one as a template. 3 Quote
PT20J Posted August 27, 2023 Report Posted August 27, 2023 You can glue it, but it won't be invisible and to get a strong solvent weld you really need to clamp it which will require some sort of jig to keep it flat. It would be easier to make a new one as @EricJ suggests. You will probably have to make two since it may be hard to find the identical shade of acrylic. @DonMuncy makes a similar visor and he might be able to make some parts to fit your hardware for a reasonable price. N201MKTurbo Posted August 27, 2023 Report Posted August 27, 2023 I’ve made new visors before. It’s not too hard. Cut them out with a saber or scroll saw and finish with a belt sander then hand sand the edges. It is just as easy to make two as one. Just stack them when you are cutting them out. The trouble is finding plastic dark enough. If you have a choice, go darker. 1 Quote
Red Leader Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 I wouldn't fix the one you have. Instead, reach out to @DonMuncy - he makes almost an exact replica of these visors (I have a pair he did for me last year). He is reasonably priced, responsive and produces a quality product. You may find that replacing the pair with his is likely to cost less than the ones produced by Lasar. Don is a very friendly guy - it was a pleasure to meet him in person last Mooney Summit in Tampa. Lots of knowledge and experience. Quote
LANCECASPER Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 LASAR awhile back had the replacement lenses for $25 Quote
A64Pilot Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 We had to cut the helmet visors for IHADDS helmets for the HDU to fit, it was different for each pilot, so it had to be custom cut. We found that a felt wheel in a dremel with some plastic polish gave a perfect polished edge quickly. I think a router with a tracer bit using the unbroken one as a pattern would quickly cut two prefect pieces. That’s how I cut the door windows for my C-140, worked perfect I think the biggest problem would be sourcing the dark plastic, if Lasar doesn’t have replacements, I’d call Don. He made my visors to my spec of course and the work is very good. Quote
Tim-37419 Posted August 28, 2023 Author Report Posted August 28, 2023 All great advice, thank you Quote
Greg Ellis Posted August 28, 2023 Report Posted August 28, 2023 Check with LASAR. They list visors on their website, sold as a pair for $28.75. Quote
amillet Posted August 29, 2023 Report Posted August 29, 2023 I’ve been waiting for a year for them to be in stock Quote

They quoted me quite a bit more for a gear leg than I paid for one through another MSC (Neither had it in stock, so both would have ordered it from Mooney). Also the new owner told me they could repair gear legs, but they can't because they don't have FAA approval yet (at least as of a couple of months ago). 1 Quote

If you need it let me know. 1 Quote
Tim-37419 Posted September 21, 2023 Author Report Posted September 21, 2023 Thank you @LANCECASPER for the offer. I'm good to go now. Tim 1 Quote
