On my M20E, for a warm start (I define warm start where the engine's cooled off from hot, but is not cold... e.g. CHTs of 120ish, Oil temp of 100deg, been sitting for an hour, etc.) First I try a hot-start just to see if it is hot. If that doesn't do anything, then I move on to the warm start method of:

  • Mixture halfway in
  • Throttle around 1200-1500rpm
  • Crank.

Usually fires up pretty quickly with that combination.

All of this depends really on the rigging of your mixture control because that's directly linked to how much fuel is making it into the engine when you're cranking. If your plane runs super rich, then you might want the mixture back a bit farther. If it's on the lean side, a bit further in, etc.
