I emailed my nearest FSDO to ask them if I can fly a plane with expired 24 month transponder certification. The reply was that they used to say it’s ok in airspace not requiring a transponder and to turn it off. But he was unsure about nowadays with ADSB and would get back to me about it. I’m Still waiting to hear.

However I do have an appointment for someone to come to my hangar Friday to do my pitot static and transponder cert. They said they don’t do anything with the ADSB capability during their test so I would think it should not be a factor regarding this issue.

Besides, I spent 4 hours before this flight reading the Dynon operators manual and an hour talking to a hangar neighbor who has a Dynon about how to work it. I didn't charge the guy for any of this.

I remember reading that there was a way to reboot the Dynon, but I couldn't remember how to do it. I poked at it for a bit, but to no avail. I had the operator's manual on my IPad, but trying to read it while flying a plane with a heavy wing in moderate turbulence with no autopilot of any kind, just wasn't working for me.

Oh how kind If you to not charge someone to learn a system that’s required to fly the airplane when you agreed to fly the airplane with a system you knew nothing about.

Your services sound so appealing

What’s your problem? Did I do something to piss you off?

Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?

I just told about a plane I was ferrying that had an avionics failure and you are treating me like a criminal? The failure didn’t affect the flight, so why does it bother you so much?

Apparently, you know how to fix broken Dynon transponders while flying in high winds and low ceilings in the mountains. I’m sorry I don’t meet your standards.

Let’s all try a little harder to keep this a place where everyone feels welcome and respected. Healthy discussion and debate is great but let’s not get personal. I’m just trying to make sure I can fly my plane without making the FAA ramp checker have a big frowny face at me.

Just make sure the person who does it I knows what they’re doing. I got a call out of the blue from Oakland FSDO a few years ago asking why my plane has been rapidly going from the ground to 18k’ right over the airport. I was about to explain the difference between and F15 and M20R to him when I remembered that was the day I had the pitot/static system checked. It sounds like that wasn’t the first time something like that had happened. I asked him if they had to divert any traffic and he said “the controllers were reasonably sure it wasn’t a real target.”

Actually, the FAA checks ADS-B for you every flight, and if it finds something amiss, they'll send you a letter.

You can check it yourself (which might not be a bad idea to do occasionally).

That article on the FAA site includes a link to a Google Earth map.  I didn't realize how sparsely the coverage areas are spaced about.

It depends a lot on altitude. When I opened the file, it was set to 500'. Open Places on the Search pane and change the altitude and it gets better.

I'll try it, thanks.

EDIT:  I tried it and, even at 3,000 feet, the coverage is almost everywhere.  I'd have to give a C- to the UI or UX or whatever the 20-somethings call it now.
