We had a York control lock in our recently sold C that fit nicely on the co-pilot's side because it didn't have brakes.    Our "new" J has brakes on both the pilot and co-pilot's rudder pedals.  Seems like a control lock like we had won't be great for rudder pedals with brakes.   What do folks use?   

I'm not gonna tie the yokes together with the seat belts unless absolutely necessary.  Besides, doing that doesn't stop the rudder from banging around.

On the J it has elevator springs and the fact the rudder is connected to the front wheel, I think it would take near hurricane strength winds to cause them to hit their stops, I just tie the yokes together to prevent the ailerons hitting. If severe storms are forecasted, I would put it in a hangar.

I try to park into the wind. If you have the detachable shoulder harness, you can use the lap belt to tie the yoke down. I find that awkward with the one piece lap/shoulder harness so I have a strap to tie the two yokes together and if it’s expected to be very windy I run the trim all the way down.

I have a control lock that I got about 20 years ago that works just fine even with the brakes, it connects the rudder pedals and captures the yoke.  It even has a hole for a lock so that it can't be easily removed.  I haven't used it in years though as I'm always hangared.  It is just sitting in my hangar if you are interested I can take some pictures this weekend..

Here are the pictures I took of the control lock I have.  I didn't have my tape measure to measure the parts but each length is about 16" and one slides into the other to make the length adjustable, that is also how you get it on and secured (the padlock with it goes through a hole once fitted and makes it very difficult to remove so is sorta like a "club").  It still had the label on it form the manufacturer so I looked it up online and they seem to still be available for about $240 I think.  Kinda pricey, I think I paid less than $50 for it in 1996.  Given I haven't used it in about 15 years, it anyone is interested in buying it, make an offer.

That's exactly what I had in my C and it worked great.   However, our "new" J has brakes on the co-pilot's rudder pedal.  It seems that one of these York control locks won't work in that case.  Am I wrong?

Works just fine on my M20J but as I said I haven't used it in years so I don't remember if there were any gotchas about putting it on though I remember it being quite easy.

I have that control lock and it came with a velco "Remove before Flight" flag that you should attach to the nosewheel to prevent towing.  It locks the nose wheel steering by restricting the rudder pedal/brake movements and also attaches to the yoke.  The only gotcha is to make sure, when you are at an FBO or in a parking area where someone may need to tow you, that you place that flag on the nose wheel and ensure no one tows your plane without removing the lock.  If you lock your plane, you may wish to leave your keys with the FBO and give them explicit instructions not to tow with the gust lock on.
