Are there any specific challenges to bringing a Canadian registered mooney to the US?  Just curious about opening up the possibilities

Form a concern point, ones I’ve see were maintained to a higher standard than US aircraft, and I believe there is very little corrosion in the great white north.

I know nothing about it, but Canada does have an owner maintained  category, I assume it’s not for complex aircraft? That would be my concern if it’s even possible.

Price out the costs, there are people who specialize in this, find one prior to purchase

You need to get together with your A&P IA and the DAR he uses to discuss the process.  An export C of A sometimes eases the process.  The biggest issue I’ve encountered is US banking system.  They will not lend unless the plane is US registered, not many sellers will export the plane in hopes of getting paid after the plane has left Canada.

Reason number 1,839 why not to borrow money to buy a plane. :)

I was looking at a 1980 Mooney 231 with the 252 cowling forward mod done on it during Covid for $98k by the time I quoted all the fees for changing the registration, and ferrying the plane back to the states including paying importation taxes it would cost me $119k. I said your plane is a good deal for a Canadian that doesn’t have to import to the states but $20k extra doesn’t make it a good deal for me anymore and I passed on the plane.

You need to pay import taxes if bringing a N registered aircraft in the USA from Canada (or elsewhere)?

When converting a canadian registration to N number there is a fee it might be called something else but its a fee never the less.

I didn’t think that the US has a federal sales tax?  If it’s a US manufactured plane, it’s just returning to its country of manufacture.  State and local taxes vary from my readings here.

California is just under 10% tax but it doesn't make any difference where you bought the plane. In state, out of country, always about 10%.

Just one more good reason to not live there . . . . .

what he 20K came from

I recently moved my plane to the N registry as I am considering selling it in the USA. The main expenditure has been the DAR visit to deliver the CofA. And of course the next one will be the cost of ferrying the plane from Europe. Overall, it will total 20-25k

Ferry flight will I assume be the big ticket item, and flying to Europe is more than Canada I’m sure.

Just curious how it gets to 20K, something makes me think am Annual may be required, but those come every year anyway. I’ve only exported aircraft, never imported one.

As  Mooney is a US manufactured aircraft, other than State taxes which are due anyway, there should be no Customs bond and or taxes.

When we import one to Canada, after travelling for the PPI, Annual inspection, Export C of A, Transport Canada C of R fee, Ministers Delegate fee for C of A,  usually a prop overhaul (because you guys don’t do them) remove old painted N number (because you guys don’t use vinyl marks) 13% taxes on Canadian dollar value of the purchase price, new proposed 10% luxury tax coming soon, ADSB with Diversity coming soon.  It gets quite expensive.

Plane for sale: $1

Tip (gratuity) to owner for : $99,999

;o)

Yea we always write them up “$1 and other considerations”. Just means the state determines the taxes value but I see no need to share.

Yep, I would get a loan for an airplane long before I ever lived there….

I do not count the annual as it would be required whether EASA or FAA.

Setting up a US trust to own the aircraft for a non US person : 1k

DAR cost : +/- 5k

ferry cost from Europe to "somewhere" on the East coast: roughly 500gal of fuel at an average of 12$/gal = 6k

various fees (landing, handling etc)+ lodging + insurance  > 10k

I understand coming from Europe will be very expensive, I was wondering why coming from Canada would be just as expensive.

It’s the Canadian breakdown that I was wondering about, I’ve exported new aircraft to Canada and don’t remember it being expensive or hard really, just couldn’t have any equipment etc installed via a 337.

Had to Certify the aircraft in Canada and there were one or two test flights to do that, but they accepted my data, got the impression that Canada was relatively easy.

A few Mooneys are sold in Europe every year…

It would be odd to ship it back here for the sale…

Then again… world turmoil may make a difference…

Weather is starting to warm up… making trans Atlantic flights more comfortable…
