I recently upgraded my old EI engine monitor to the EDM-830. The avionics shop removed my Shadin miniflo saying the two could not be run together from the same flow transducer. Fortunately none of the Shadin wiring was touched! They left the miniflow connected to port 1 (disabled) of my GTN and set the EDM up on port 4. 

A friend with a Mooney has the EDM-700 working together with a Shadin but he doesn't know how his shop did it. He claims to have only a single flow transducer.

Does anyone here know how this can be done?

I can't tell you specifics, but IIRC the Shadin is a specific option called out in the EDM-730/830 installation manual.  It requires nothing special, just a comment that the EDM was installed using that option.  They may be correct, in saying the Shadin sensor can't be connected to two devices at once, but I thought the EDM has a repeater output for fuel flow it can send to a second device.

Mind you this is all from memory, so hopefully someone who has seen this or has the manuals handy can comment!

It can be done, one of the instruments provides power, both get signal and ground.  You might need diodes on the lines going to the 'un-powered'  connection.  I have a drawing somewhere, send me an email.

No special option. I have this on mine. The flow transducer gets power by one instrument, but the signal wire, negative and ground go to both instruments. Works great. The wiring for this is shown in either the EDM or Shadin manual, but it as easy as it sounds.

Just got fuel flow added to my jpi-700. Had to send the unit back to jpi to get that option added as they had to change out a board for the connector but it’s definitely doable. Found out my shadin was .5 gallons per hour fast but did not want to take it apart to adjust the k-factor where as the jpi k-factor is software adjustable in the settings. So i lean with jpi FF readings and no kidding how much gas i have were as my shadin total is my bingo / plan fuel with.

I thought I’d give an update to this thread. Finally I was able to bring my plane back to Bankstown (YSBK) for the refitting of the Shadin Miniflo with a wiring diagram supplied to me by AERODAN (many thanks!). He obtained the diagram from JPI and it involved putting two diodes near the transducer.

Seemingly all good! However, on an extensive recent trip (of over 30 hours) I discovered a very strange anomaly! I can’t make sense of it. When I’m navigating towards a user created waypoint (Gamin GTN650) the Shadin will not properly display the correct fuel to the destination waypoint while the EDM730 does. If I turn off the Shadin and restart it it will initially read the correct fuel to the waypoint and then progressively show a larger and larger discrepancy compared to the EDM730 as it correctly counts down. If I shut the Shadin down and restart it will then again show the correct required fuel but fail to count down properly. I should add that both units always agree on the actual fuel flow so it must have something to do with data coming from the GTN. 

This behaviour only (so far) has occurred with user waypoints and not waypoints contained in the GTN database. I can’t for the life of me make any sense of this.....too weird to be true? For the majority of my flights the two units agree very closely in terms of fuel flow and fuel to waypoint.

can I get a copy of the wiring drawing? My shading goes to my 530W and shading airflow computer. My edm700 has the fuel flow option but it was hooked up.
