Sometimes good ideas are hard to get accepted by the people you want to have take interest….

It's all I can do to hold myself back from commenting on the above, having taught for the PPP for many years, many years ago...

Don,

I’m hoping it’s not what or how I said it it….

I was hoping to get somebody motivated to get more involved…. He is out in Hawaii making it a bit extra challenging to get to where the MAPA PPP is…

I’m flying today, because a MAPA CFII reached out to me when I needed a hand…. (Cris Gleason)

And of course…. My landings are molded by a particular video I got a decade ago….

Lets see… the most advanced instrument panel, in the most advanced Mooney….

Hmmmm…   Having somebody find the right guy at MAPA shouldn’t be that hard now…..

My apologies if I didn’t get something right…

You have great control…

Me… not so much…

:)

Best regards,

My comments had absolutely nothing to do with you, and everything about what I think about the PPP.  I used that sentence as a key to my thoughts, to, I thought, discreetly express my opinion without going into any more detail.  I agree with @philip_g's comment following your post, although he may be taking a dig at me, not knowing my history with the PPP.  From my perspective he described the PPP perfectly.

I think we need some younger folk involved.

And why does it need to be "younger" folk???   (No offense to you wipper-snappers...  :P)

It was encouraging to see a few pilots and instructors this past weekend in Lakeland in their 20's and 30's along with the rest of us. :)

It was my first MAPA PPP and I enjoyed it. The program on Friday was a full day ground school broken into many 30-45 minute presentations, which were handled nicely. It varied from general to specific and even down to owner maintenance, which was excellent. It included a brief presentation from a controller from Lakeland Tower and a nice ICAO flight plan presentation from one of the younger instructors to get everyone's Foreflight and Garmin Pilot up to speed on filing flight plans.

After that some of us went flying to get some night time in, along with some actual. The next day on Saturday was cold and windy but above 6000 it was smooth for air work and again very helpful and enjoyable. It was a weekend well spent and although I might not go back every year, it would be something I would consider every couple of years. It was nice sharing ideas with fellow Mooney pilots. I think one nice addition in the future would be a 60-90 minute breakout session for model groups, even just short, medium and long bodies to share ideas and maintenance issues. There were 30 Mooney pilots there: 6 Acclaims, 11 Ovations, One 252, One 231, Nine Js and Two Es. I think I traveled the farthest. There were a few of us from TX and the Gulf Coast States and then mainly the Eastern States and 10 from FL.

My apologies to those with larger than average prostate glands and active AARP memberships. I completely agree - age isn’t the problem. It’s the behaviors outlined above and the resistance to change/improve/evolve.

It would take about 15 minutes to make a pdf of the manual and set up an Etsy store to sell it online (it took my son about that long to set up his store). Live-streaming the videos or recording them and editing them to view later is ridiculously easy. My son is in elementary school and produces his own videos, edits them on Final Cut Pro and posts them online. He even edits some of his friend’s videos.

Lots of dinosaurs had great stuff but then were wiped out by disruptive technologies. Anyone remember Sears?

Imagine if they sold the course with an online option where you watch the videos either together or asynchronously then they send you a list of recommended instructors and you finish the flying with someone on the list. How many more sessions could you have a year and how many more people would you reach?

Wipper-Snapper reporting! You guys are right not much to do with age but the mentality.

Apologies for stereotyping having witnessed that mentality across many aviation events (I used to be the youngest...this ppp I came in second place) my confirmation bias kicked in.

I just got a response from one of the board members about the Zoom stream and he will bring it up with MAPA for the April event.

Here is a dumb question.   Are the Mooney Safety institute and MAPA one in the same?

No, they started out under MAPA 32 years ago, but are incorporated as a separate non-profit.

Weeellll....  Maybe not 15 minutes.

I've got an electronic copy of my manual so I can look things up while sitting here at the computer and with me when I fly.  Some of the graphics and equations didn't come across very well.  I've never bothered to fix them because I've always had the binder to refer to if needed.

Now with the original file that went to the printer and possibly some of the original graphics, I could easily come up with a clean electronic version to give back to the PPP folks.

ADDED:  Actually it's been a few years since I've been to a PPP, so the print and graphics quality of the binder may have improved.  So it may be possible to turn the latest version into a searchable electronic document with chapter links in a relatively short time.

Having the PDF imported I to wingx pro would be ideal.

Actually, what's even better is to go through and grab the Key Numbers and other gotta-have info from the Binder and put all that info in a Word Doc with big print.  Then when you've got a great Info Doc for your plane, make a PDF of it to import into WingX.

Side Note: For the Doc I created and imported into FF I started the name with an "_" (underscore) to put it towards the top of the list.  Same for my "_  Emergency Check List" but note the two space after the underscore to make sure it is AT the top of the list.  I have a quick reference so I don't have to go digging into the Documents, but on a l long flight it there just to review.  Or if another pilot was with me and something did happen they can find it easily to start going down the list on my 2nd iPad.

Adobe Acrobat Pro will turn a word document into a searchable pdf in a couple of minutes. My guess is they don’t want to lose control of the document and by making you pay for the class in order to get the contents it allows them to retain control. It’s their document to do with as they please so it’s a perfectly understandable approach, just limits the audience.

I didn’t have time to take the APS engine management course in person so I did it online and got the binder. I’m sure if I’d gone in-person I would have learned more but I still learned a ton from doing it online and reading the binder. None of this stuff is rocket science. If they wanted to make it more accessible they easily can - the fact that they haven’t supports some of the criticisms others have made.

Pending the size of the Doc, correct.  But also pending the quality of the graphics and how they were inserted into the Word document, that can be an issue.  And this, of course, assumes the original is even a Word Doc.

Although Print and Graphics are not my primary business, I've been involved with graphics people for decades and have been called into service when things have gone wacky on large events many a time....
