My airplane is going to have a very extensive annual and avionics install in February. I’m going to have the interior significantly removed and want to replace all of the old fiberglass insulation. Any recommendations for insulation type and how much I need for an E?

I bought some bulk material from a MSC that got it from Mooney -- same stuff they use in production. It's foam about 1/2 thick with aluminized mylar on one side and adhesive on the other. Mooney has burn certs for it. I understand that Aerocomfort also has material available.

You can buy SoundEx material from Aircraft Spruce.  I do not like the stuff that sticks to the skins as you can never inspect if necessary.  I just placed it between the tubes and used 3M Aluminum tape to hold it in place.  The website is:

The 3M tape is:

Both are not cheap, but both are excellent products.  Do not buy less expensive aluminum tape.  It will not stick.

I used the Soundex behind the side panels and in the ceiling.

I've used Soundex in a couple of Mooneys that I had, when I had the interior re-done. It is an excellent product and yes, buy it from Spruce, it's a better deal. Ironically it didn't do a lot for quieting the airplane - the number one noise is the door seal, or lack thereof. But it does help a little with the noise. It does however do great things for temperature. Much easier to heat in the flight levels and stays cooler in the summer.

Our experience exactly.

One more thing to add, Soundex recommends that you using an electric carving knife to cut the product, which I thought was strange. But who am I to argue with them? Off I went to Walmart and bought and electric knife, like you would use to carve a turkey, and sure enough it worked really well.
