What kind of primer are they using now?  Is it zinc phosphate?

TBH I don't know but looks like zinc chromate

@lithium366 I love your final paint scheme!!  IMHO, the short bodies look much better with long straight horizontal lines rather than the upswept curves onto the tail that appeared on the newer planes from the factory but now often get put on short bodies.  Those curves make the short airframe look even stubbier, whereas the straight horizontal lines elongate it visually.  Your unconventional color selection is cool also, and I do think it looks better without the gold.  I might have to "borrow" from your design if I'm ever lucky enough to repaint my C model.

Congratulations..... moving forward.

Hopefully all belly panels were removed and painted independently.

Wheel wells painted too?

Now begins the additional excitement of your attractive scheme layout.:D  Again, Tony and all are artistic experts!! Your imagination will run hard as you mentally convert taping/masking/color step painting process images into how gorgeous all will look when completely unmasked and all completely reassembled!!

I guarantee you are going to be beyond overwhelmed with total joy and excitement when you first see your beautiful Mooney waiting for you out on the ramp, once Tony, Robert, Manny, Teresa and all roll it out for you!!

And from that moment forward, the thrill and pride will continue each time you’re with your Mooney.

Can’t wait!!!:D

Yep, so glad panels were removed and painted separately......prevents paint seam breaking when it’s time to remove them for inspection.

Good for you!

Folks, here is the second episode where I discuss what affects the price of a paint job with Brenda from Art-Craft Paint. She also shows me their facility.

Seeing another Mooney in there has to be a good sign!

Curious if you get a chance to verify.  Wondering if zinc chromate is still used in the professional shops or if they've moved to something else (and what it is).  Thanks.

I can ask Theresa but for the context is there a worry or concern?

Not with your plane!  Sorry.   I'd just like to know what the pros are using in the shops now.  Health and safety concerns changed the content of primers years ago.  My plane was last painted about 10 years ago.  I recently used Zinc Phosphate on a small AL piece but I'm not sure if that's the best you can do on AL now.

Folks here is the moment I was waiting for! Final colors and reveal! This was such an amazing project to work with Art-Craft together. They really do an exceptional job and I encourage everyone to talk to them before you decide to repaint your airplane even if you don't plan to use them as your shop. Great thread and videos @lithium366!  Curious as to how they repaint the gear and wheel wells and what that prep looked like given they don't want paint stripper up inside the aircraft; you can see from the stripping video that gear were covered with plastic and tape.  Also, in episode 4 you mentioned a leak in the windshield and not getting a chance to change to one piece...what was the thought about not doing this before paint?  It's awesome that you're close to a paint shop and can be so involved in the entire process!!  I'm sure that has to be a very uncomfortably patient and horribly rewarding process!

Hey Marc

For gear and wheel wells they removed old paint mechanically where needed and painted over the old paint where it was holding well. You right they didn’t do any chemical stripping in delicate areas

As for the windshield - i did not plan to replace it with one piece but wanted to ask ArtCraft to reseal it during the painting process. I changed my mind later when I realized that one piece windshield is not a bank breaker compared to a 201 windshield and asked them to replace it for me while they repaint

Thanks llya...I thoroughly enjoyed that series!

Its looks so nice, very nice job on the design.

The people at Santa Maria Art Craft seems to do a very good and thorough job. A new paint job is definitily something I would love and will keep them in mind when the time does come.

:)
