The air vent by the pilot knee on my 201 is not secured to anything but the interior piece it is mounted too. It hangs out from the side of the fuselage and hits my leg and us kind of loose . It also has lousy airflow. Does the vent take a special hose or it a just a piece of scat hose cut to length? How should it of been secured at the factory? July in Florida is not a good time for lousy ventilation. Suggestion are appreciated.

The air vent should be secured to the air shop on the side of the fuselage, trapping the upholstery panel in between.  Often the the screw holes in the scoop become stripped and will hold nothing.  
Run the screws through and add Tinnerman flat spring nuts on the outside by reaching into the scoop.

There's no hose.   It's an eyeball vent and can be lubed with spray from inside or outside.    Mine was stuck when I got my airplane and it freed up pretty easily.

It sounds like something is wrong with your installation and as described it might cause water to enter the air scoop and drip down on the structure creating a corrosion hazard.

The Wemac vent should have a bead of sealant applied between it an the cabin side of the air scoop. Then the carpeted panel with a clearance hole goes over that. Finally a trim ring goes over the carpet and four PK screws go through the trim ring, carpet, Wemac and into tinnermans on the scoop securing the whole thing together.

I thought the pilot's side air vent was originally an avionics cooler vent that people modded to become a cabin vent?  As such, there's no actual place to mount it, unlike the passenger side air vent

What I described is the way my 1994 M20J is built. Looking at the IPC, there are apparently versions with a duct to the Wemac in which case perhaps only the carpeted trim panel supports the vent. In this case the lack fo airflow might be due to a disconnected duct. Probably need to take the side panel off to see what you have.

 I think the avionics cooling always came from the right side.

On the K models, the early (1979) models had a direct external vent.  Somewhere before 1985 that external vent was removed and the eyeball vent now attaches to a scat hose that crosses to the co-pilot side and ties into the external vent on that side.  Drag reduction??? Maybe?

I assume that the J made a similar transition.

Thank Clarence I appreciate your suggestion. The vent on my 84 201 appears to be only attached to the interior panel which is kind of wimpy. It is almost like it need a stiffener on the outside of the panel. There must be different vent combinations for different serial number 201 mine is 24-1443. It also has very low flow-close to worthless.

There must be different configurations. I am going to have to pull that panel out and see what is up.

Thanks for looking that up. I think you broke the code. The hose must either of come loose or is clogged. July in Florida is a bad time to have a poor vent.

+1 on eyeball air vent airflow…

It should be blasting when open, and nothing when closed…

Across the line for all Mooneys… in any location…  ceiling, pilot side, and copilot side….

 

So… if you aren’t getting much flow…. Expect something can be improved.

Ceiling eyeball vents are the most challenging for getting airflow… some plastic parts, and horsehair filters have known to be problematic…
