David S (@Sabremech) is trying to get a 2nd batch of the infamous CNC'ed Johnson Bar up/downlock blocks run again for us. The more orders, the better. If you want one or a set, please post your intentions below (IE 1x downlock only/set of 1x down and 1x uplock). I will be working on a payment system and once we have that squared away, I will be gathering contact and shipment information from everyone. Lead time is 6 weeks from the time we place the order.

30 or more Uplock - $233.37 each

----->40 or more Uplock- $205.36 each<------

30 or more Downlock- $265.86 each

---->40 or more Downlock- $223.90 each<---------

Do we know the cost for a set?  I'm interested in having one on standby for the future....right now mine just cleared annual and are fine.

Last time I think it was around $400 for the down lock and $320 or so for the up lock. It is dependent on the number ordered, I don't know how many were in the last run. If you planned on $800 for the set I would think it would be below that.

What's the ETA on these? Any idea? Just looking of a rough idea. Spring, Summer, Fall?

Last time when they had all finished collecting the orders in I think it was less than a month? @Sabremech can correct me. The entire process from start to finish took longer last time because the drawings and metal analysis had to be done. This time it would just be collecting the orders and submitting them.

Just to update the group. I am waiting on a quote from my machine shop. Definitely having a larger order will reduce the price. As soon as I get the quote, I’ll post it here for everyone to see. There is no markup by me so you’ll get the price given to me by the shop. As to timeframe, I’ll try to get a good estimate of how long to complete. I know the shop is very busy but they usually knock out parts for me quicker than promised.
Thank you,

David

Last run, which had less people than our current list, was IIRC $300/up and $350/down. As David said, we're waiting on estimate. Let me know if you want to be added. With a list this large, I suspect it would be cheaper to get it now versus a smaller, 3rd run later on.

Already 24 people interested! I hope we can make it at least 30 and get the costs lower. This should be a good win for vintage owners everywhere to keep them airworthy and keep the bulletproof legacy intact. Thanks again, David.

I’m interested in a down block and possibly an up block, if pricing comes out cheaper than last time. I did buy a set of drawings  already before the first run of blocks. Thanks!

Ditto for me.

Can anyone explain or point me int he direction of the reasons to replace these? Other than peace of mind?

Thanks!

Peace of mind... or because the worn ones don’t work properly...

Simply...

The down lock block...

The one on the instrument panel...

Wears at a really high rate compared to what one would expect to see...

over time the round hole turns egg shaped...

The egg shaped hole has a step at the bottom of the hole...

The whole hole wearing problem turns into a disaster...

On the scale of everything is fine... to GU landing...

The worn down lock block leads to GU landings...

You can fly with the worn out block...

Over time, you will find the J-bar goes into the hole, but doesn’t seat all the time...

When it doesn’t seat, it is a big risk of failing.... ending with a gear collapse...

It is important to have your green gear light properly adjusted...

...and know what the thumbnail test is...

If not sure...

The next time you are flying...

Take a pic with your i-device pointed up at the hole...

If you see a perfect round hole... you are good to go...

If you see an egg shaped hole with a step... be on your toes each time you are putting the gear down...

It is important to have the gear down AND locked...

A properly set up down lock block is as fail proof as it can get...

The gear is down and locked at the same time...

a worn out block is as miserable as it can get...

Because, the PIC thinks the gear is down and locked, but it is only down and not locked...

The oval hole with a step in it is the cause of it not locking...

The reason for the wear... the J-bar is steal, the block is aluminum... the difference in hardness causes the wear to show up in the aluminum block...

Nobody lubricates this part of the system... so it wears...

For the up-lock block...

Expect the same logic as the down lock block...

If you have ever lowered the gear at a higher speed than that used in the traffic pattern...

You have noticed the J-bar come through the cabin at a faster rate...

If you extend this experience to lowering the gear at cruise speeds... the J-bar rips through the cabin, and slams into the instrument panel strong enough to bend steel...

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic... experiences shared on MS over the years...

Best regards,

-a-
