Marauder Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 One of our biggest turnouts with 18 people in about 12 Mooneys Great turnout! Really wanted to make it out. Been busy instead being a phlegm factory and keeping Kleenex stock value up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro 1 Quote
Seth Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 I made it! An hour late! But I was there! Thanks Mike for organizing. Here are some of the Mooneys. There were four on another section of the ramp (including mine). -Seth 1 Quote

flyboy0681 Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 After downloading it and turning it right side up, I see it's an impressive mix of Mooney's. Looking at the pictures in detail I noticed that the two blade props are all indexed to the 11 & 5 position. Is there a specific reason for that? Quote
TomR Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 Great to see everybody today! Had a great time 1 Quote

Rmag Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 I videoed my flight and also some other Moonies (is that the plural for Mooney?) arriving. I'll post when I get it edited, working on it now... 1 Quote

jetdriven Posted March 17, 2018 Report Posted March 17, 2018 The prop bushings are indexed where the prop only fits on one way. Basically the prop is a few degrees offset from TDC when the prop is horizontal. Quote
carusoam Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 RMag..... Mooneys.... because the other spelling was the guys that used to sell flowers at grand central station.... Great photos! -a- Quote

The first thing I do before attaching the tow bar is move it to 9 & 3, and after securing her in a transient parking space. Just saying. Quote
DonMuncy Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 From a position of total ignorance, my guess is that the engine/prop design was originally done to get maximum effect from hand propping. 1 Quote

That's exactly what I was taught 25 years ago by the really old IA that taught me. Not sure if it's true but it still sounds good to me. Quote
carusoam Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 There is a mechanical reason for prop indexing... Expect that there may be a mechanical reason that balances the power pulses with the strength of materials to avoid or minimize harmonic vibrations... from an old and inexact memory, the power pulse is delivered when the blade is moving downwards(?) compared to the relative wind... after that... Where it stops is consistent, but relatively random in terms of design. The prop runs into the next compression stroke As far as hand propping goes... nothing convenient about it. People that do it, seem to move the prop around a lot, looking for compression before pulling the prop through. (Non-mooney experience) if the indexing step was missed while installing the prop or compression is going away, the prop will stop in an odd spot... Fuzzy ideas of a PP, not a mechanic... wishing I could have been there... Best regards, -a- Quote
jetdriven Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 The first J’s were equipped wirh an A1B6D engine which has a different prop index than the A3B6D. In fact it’s the only difference. They put out a service letter that said basically for smoother operation, change the prop flange index bushings and replace the data plate for the change. Iirc the A1B6D is still on the 2A3 TCDS for the M20J Heres the bulletin. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 Byron, In terms of degrees, Any idea how much the index changed with the service letter? one bolt location, or something more obvious like 90°? Best regards, -a- Quote
Rmag Posted March 18, 2018 Report Posted March 18, 2018 Above is the YouTube Video of my flight to KRDG. I was the first to arrive. I took some video of Mooneys arriving and a shorter video of my flight home. You can hear the radio chatter of several of us leaving on the second flight. For the first flight I tried to talk my way through what I was doing and demo some of the features of the avionics package. 5 Quote

I did notice a reduction in vibration but my prop still stopped at the same 11-5 o’clock position. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

My only criticism is your pulling of the mixture while still on an active runway. I've always been taught to stay away from that practice - just in case. Quote

I do it routinely, and have only been bitten once--after several years of Mooney ownership, I flew a Cessna again, and leaned like always. Engine died on the runway, but was able to restart with some priming to refill the fuel lines. Quote

Some further recommend not to do any Post Flight cleanup until exiting the runway. If I have a quick turn off often I’ll just wait to do anything. But if I have a bit of a roll out I start to cleanup. I don’t lean enough on my pull to starve the engine. I’ve never in my entire history ever killed an engine inadvertently, but I can see the logic not wanting to risk it in an active runway. Thanks for the thought... I think I may just wait for cleanups now. No rush right? Quote

Was sick as a dog with a nasty cold. Great video! Got me thinking about that voice recognition software. Would have loved to see the new visual approach feature in action. Hopefully will have a chance to catch up this summer at another Mooney Fly-in. Quote
