I'm thinking a bit more than I probably should on a Saturday night (thank you Johnny Gold Label Reserve!), but I wondering what to do with my old non-WAAS 430..................

Send it Garmin and get it upgraded?

Upgrade to a GTN-650?

Ditch Garmin and upgrade to a Avidyne 440?

Indulge me with your opinions!

Ultimately you're gonna get to either the IFD440 or the GTN650.  If you did the WAAS upgrade today... you'll just be pushing the trade up out a year.  Of course by then, the 430W won't be worth as much.

I've flown with both the IFD440 and the GTN650 and prefer the 440.  It's also cheaper to install, as has been pointed out already.

I was in a similar situation back in November and went with the IFD and am very happy with that decision.

If you can rearrange something on the panel, the connectors are the same for the 430  as on the IFD540. All you need is a little more room to fit it in. Well worth the difference in price between 440 and 540.

I sold a 530w and 430w a couple years ago and the prices are the same now or a little higher. Unless the new units come down in price or the used markets become saturated the 430 will probably continue holding its value.

If you are considering both the GTN and IFD after using a 430, costs and arguments over which is "better" aside, it's a good idea to download both simulators, available for both Windows and iOS.

The main advantage to a previous Garmin user (other than the 489) in sticking with Garmin is going to be familiarity of software flow, typically translating to a much smaller learning curve.

"Intuitive" is in the eye of the beholder. I'm much more familiar with the GTN than the IFD, but if my experience as a 430/530 user is at all typical, it took less than an hour playing with the sim and one flight to feel completely comfortable with the GTN. I'm still trying to figure out how to do basic things in the IFD. OTOH, friends who were familiar with the 480 (which was not really a Garmin) found the UFD transition simpler.

To add to the above I feel the 430w will continue to be the standard for many years into the future. However, with adsb and fewer nav approaches the delta between the standard and waas versions will continue to increase in the years to come. 

Also let's be honest, probably half the IFR gps units are not pushed beyond direct to functions.

I could have sworn that I read last year that Garmin no longer supports the 430 and 530. However, that is a recollection and not based on a serious inquiry on my part.

This is only for 28v only units and NON WAAS. They still support everything else and will probably continue to for many years.

Good thread.
My 430 and Sandel are pretty dated, but they couple well. This is my last plane. I hope. I will likely upgrade to WAAS with the 430 at same time I replace the KT-76 transponder.

You will like that! Did mine just a very few months after I purchased her, so I can't really comment on the differences. And it was in 2007 . . .
