When the weather looks like this, and you want to fly to work....

But the forecast shows this for your return....

And there is a really good chance you won't get into the airport with mins of 600/1....

I miss being able to fly to work . . . It was 8.2 nm up the Ohio River, leaving my 3001' paved home base for the nearby 2000' grass strip on the other bank. Now work is just across the Tallapoosa River from the airport, about 3-4 minute drive, but there's nowhere to fly to!

I will be landing at RFD right at that time,,about 0130 am local.  Will let you know how it goes....

Yes.  It was not nearly as bad as predicted, but, only having a VOR-A at my field changes the game a little.  I can always go to KRFD, but trying to get my wife to pick me up at 0200 could be tricky!

When I was a newly minted pilot, I was coming home from Mecham (Ft Worth), it was night, had a layer overhead that was dropping fast, dew point and temperature were closing, so I made the decision to land at an airport about 20 miles from my home airport. My house is 15 miles the other direction so my wife had to drive 35 miles to pick me up. To say she tolerates my flying is generous. The decision to land wasn't difficult.....the phone call to have her come pick me up.....yeah, she might have mentioned a couple of times on the ride home how great it was to have airplane. We're still married though...29 years and counting. :)

I have one word of advice:  Uber.    :P

I flew to work for 20 years. Be careful what you ask for. After a few years the plane looses its fascination. And just gets to be another vehicle to maintain.

FWIW I can't imagine a better plane for a daily driver.

I imagine who ever thought of uber was still a gleam in his dad's eye.....I did consider calling my brother but figured I just as soon get the crow cookin' so it wouldn't be so hard to digest.

I try not to cancel on forecast, usually they are wrong. But it depends on how much flexibility I have in my travels.

Typically I won't either, but this particular day I had a couple things going on. One was the weather but the other was the plane just came out of annual and I was having a few problems that I needed to sort out with instrument lighting.

I could just see flying home at two in the morning, in Imc and have the instrument lights quit working.

Rarely is it only one thing that leads to an accident.

In my professional flying life we talk a lot about risk management. This particular day, the risk just wasn't worth the reward.

Yep! She is my daily driver. I couldn't think of a better one! Especially when I fly over I-90 and it's backed up for 10 miles.

I'm having as much fun working on her as I am flying her :-)

I know the feeling.  I just went to Indy for the weekend.  Weather in New Orleans for yesterday was predicted to be bad.  Went to plan B took a longer route home on the back side (west) of the weather and then was able to make the final flight into New Orleans and landed right at dark.  Flexibility is the key.  You may use more fuel and just as much time if you drove but if you can do it safely then why not.  One other guy up there flew commercial and he got home about 15 minutes before me with weather delays in ATL.  Now he did leave a couple of hours after me.  The other plus is on my 3 hour layover for weather a friend and I went to eat lunch he came by and picked me up.
