The GNS430 in my J has died. If anyone is about to upgrade and wants to sell their 430 (preferable WAAS), I need a replacement. Thanks.

Unfortunately, after I bought the plane in March, I went to have the 430 upgraded to WAAS and upon removing from the panel discovered that it did not have a serial number tag on it. Garmin says they won't touch it.

It does suck. The previous owner is an insurance broker and he had insured the owner prior to him - and he insures me now. Apparently that owner had made a claim that the 430 was stolen (15 or so years ago), but looking through the logs, I see no reference to it being stolen or a new unit being installed. So we are assuming that the guy lied about it being stolen, pocketed the insurance money, pulled the tag off and put it back in the plane. The insurance company that insured the plane at the time has (I'm told) since been bought out by another company and they haven't kept the records from that long ago. So I don't believe I have any recourse???

That is really unfortunate ohdub, but really intetesting.

Who would think to pull out radios and checks serial numbers when buying a plane?!

I wonder if there is a database somewhere that does track radios reported stolen by serial number. This would be great to check prior to buying used eq.

I believe Garmin has such a database. I've read of smart thieves that will steal a unit from one plane, and then swap it into a second plane after they take plane #2's unit. Plane #1 reports their loss and serial number, while Plane #2 has no idea and never reports their serial number...

I wonder why Garmin wouldn't touch it. Isn't the serial number on the firmware? It is on my GTN.

If you don't mind spending a bit more money (only one arm and one leg) you might consider the Avidyne IFD440.  Slide in replacement for the GNS430.  WAAS touchscreen.  Current price at Pacific Coast Avionics is $11,495, no shipping, no sales tax.

That sure sounds like a lot of work! They need to break into two planes!

How about when the pilot of plane #2 goes to turn on their unit and finds a stored flight plan he doesn't recognize?!

The radio loses its TSO when the data tag is removed , One of my vendors who is one of the largest resellers , will remove the data tag if a customer declines repair and tells them to dispose of the radio....No manufacturer will reissue a data tag.......  That being said , I have a 28 volt 430 non W.A.A.S. with fresh paperwork coming in this week , 4000 and its yours...
