How do you update to 7.5? Mine is 4.2.3. Is the log book feature automatic like on the G560?

Yeah, the Android version lags behind the iOS version. I had it running on a Nexus 7 and my iPad and found it irritating to see the differences between the two platforms. I drop the Nexus and went with an iPad Mini.

Yes, it's semiautomatic, you have to accept it, and it doesn't know if you shot an approach, but it does the airtime, nighttime, and knows if it's a cross country trip so normally you can just accept it. If you have 2 GP devices, you'll get 2 logs and just need to decline the extra one.

If you go to the Google Play Store and look at the "My Apps" section, it will indicate if you need to update the app. By default, it should tell you updates are available unless you turned that off.

The logbook and terrain may not be available on the Android version. They typically logged several months behind the Apple version. If you go into Google Play and update, let us know if they are there.

There are two teams working on the Garmin Pilot app. One dedicated to the iOS platform and the other the Android. I think the iOS team does the introduction of most of the new features first.

Version 8.1.0 on iOS has the vertical flight profile. But not available on iPad mini. I have a retina display and could easily use that feature. Damn!

Display the map then hit Menu, then Split Screen. Flight Profile is the last item on the list.

There are some nice features added in 8.1.0, but I think they may have been copied from ForeFlight. The profile stuff was in the last version of ForeFlight before I dropped it.

I like the wind aloft piece added to the Flight Plan screens. Helps with altitude selection. The altitude profile is probably more useful for people in the big hills. If I fly 5,000, I'm above most everything on the east coast. But it is nice to have.

It also looks the alternate feature will come in handy. I am curious if it will work while you are in flight. If a TAF changes, I suspect it will update the alternate information.

The altitude display on the dynamic maps was a pet peeve of mine. Glad it was added. When I am flying VFR cross country, I am usually using the dynamic maps. Nice now to be able to look down and get the information without probing.

Yes, competition is a good thing! Next step is the approach chart overlay on the enroute charts which interestingly was done by Anywheremap when they were active (PC and large tablet era). Foreflight was first to do that for the iPad.

This is the feature I'm waiting for next.

I was an early adapter of Anywhere Map on my Cassiopeia and thought it was the cats meow at the time, circa 2001.

I still have the HP iPaq and the Samsung Q1 which ran that software with lifetime subscriptions. They missed the boat badly.

While you cannot EASILY do this, if you know what approach you are going to fly you can manually add all the fixes as waypoints in your flightplan.  If your preflight weather briefing indicates that winds will favor a specific runway, and you know your approach preferences, you can pretty much know what approach you are going to fly before you leave home.

I like Garmin Pilot's SVT but it is just a toy if they do not get around to doing a split screen (like Foreflight) since you would want it either together with a chart or an approach plate.  I cannot figure when I would want it all by itself.  I have suggested this to Garmin a few times by email in 2 years, and also in person at Oshkosh, and they say its on their to do list but they have other projects first.  (VIRB?  GTX335? GX3?....)

Wishboneash was commenting about overlays. Either one of the Aspens can do an overlay. The PFD on the left has the approach waypoints on the HSI or you can load up an approach plate like the MFD has. Never have been so spoiled!

LOL! Since installing this stuff back in 2012, I'm having a real hard time remembering "the good old days". Yeah, it ain't cheap, but it sure is informative. Especially things like georeferenced safe taxi charts.
