I was flying along today and noticed that the stall strip on the port wing is at a lower angle to the relative airflow than the right wing. I've never noticed that on other planes before - is this normal?

It's a 1978 M20J. Some pictures are attached

Thanks in advance! I really enjoy these forums.

My understanding is that the locations are worked out during the test flights at the Factory and is used to balance the stall characteristics.

Agree with this...each plane is fine-tuned during test flights to position the strips.  Each hand-built plane turns out just a little bit different.

When I was doing my instrument instruction in my plane the CFI I used thought they were accidentally asymmetric and told me I should get it fixed. I didn't know, at the time, that they were purposely placed the way they were.

I heard that the stall strips were taped in place for the test flights, and moved around over enough flights to get it level and stalling without rolling either direction, then screwed in place. Mooneyland (Richard Zephro) used to advocate removing them and having them chromed for extra visibility. I always wanted to, but was never able to find someone who could plate them where I lived. Still don't know, and I live somewhere else now . . .

What problem is chroming a stall strip solving?

It adds ramp appeal, and increases daytime visibility through additional shine. He also recommended chrome hubcaps and anything else that could be chromed to sparkle in the sun. Back in the days before LED lighting, which is still very limited and expensive for us. Already have a polished spinner, which I keep shiny.
