on the 6 clynder 300hp mooneys a two blade big enough to absorb the horse power bite out of the air would be so long on a low to the ground mooney... prop clearance becomes an issue.

Wash-rinse-repeat. This is like comparing a banjo to a guitar. They are different, but both have advantages. I would go with a 2-blade for two reasons. Faster&Cheaper.

Now a statement like "Vespas are cool"....Chic? O.K. Neato? Yup. Groovy? Yes. Cool? Not so much.

Vrooom....Vrooom.

Like comparing a Mustang experience to a 152.

Are 152's cool?

 

I think the aerobat is is pretty cool! Even the venerable 172 can have it's moments.

 

I must disagree with your assessment of the Vespa.  While I prefer the sort of two wheeled machines that were made in Coventry or Meriden England.  Vespas are in fact the style pinnacle or small displacement, efficient, urban transport. They are beautifully designed, reliable (models from the 70's are still numerous on the streets of Italian cities) and practical.  It is indeed an iconic machine that will likely be in production in some form after everyone on this board has gone West!

Its a matter on context Vespa's can be cool in the right situation. As for 152's given the mission a 150 or 152 can be very cool. INMO anything that has wings and can take to the sky is in my book cool.  When I retire and can no longer afford a complex I will be looking for a 150 or 152 with a 150HP STC. or perhaps a Grumman Yankee with a 160.

Interesting!  So Mooney went back to the 2 blade for the 280HP Ovation 2 and that made it faster, but another 20HP and the tips would need to be extended so much as to interfere with ground clearance?  I think that there's a bit more to the story.  Another interesting point is that the 2 and 3 blade Hartzell props for many Mooneys have the same max footprint, 74" diameter and a very similar minimum of 72.5" (2 blade) and 73" (3 blade).

Please post some photos standing in front of your Vespa's so I can see what cool looks like. Now tht you mention it Howard W looks pretty "cool" as he adjusts one of his many belt buckles prior to straddling his Vespa in his tight pants....

To each their own. Might have been "Hip" to be in a scooter gang, but I am not wavering on my NOT COOL zone Vespa assessment. Tom Cruise raising his fist as he races an F14 on his Ninja....Cool.

I have no doubt that Howard thinks he is "cool" on the Vespa. Last I checked this is a sitcom about nerdy scientists...

When I retire I will be looking to continue flying my Mooney and find a Beck 550 Spyder kit car to play with. James Dean, Porsche 550 Cool....

Piper Cub with drop down doors....Cool. Cessna 150/152? Whatever floats your boat...Or in the case of a float plane (any) COOL!

Really? Spend a lot of time with Tom? Really know him. O.K.

-Tom owns and flies a P-51 (cool)

-Tom is a pilot and motorcycle rider (cool)

-Tom does movies like Oblivion with awesome aviation based sequences (cool)

-The trailer for July M.I. movie shows Tom riding sport bikes and hanging off the side of a jet on take-off (cool meets awesome)

I don't KNOW Tom Cruise. I do really enjoy his movies and anybody that flies a Mustang is Cool in my book.

I had a 3-blade on my J and it worked fine, but if I were you I'd look into the Hartzell Scimitar 2-blade replacement. I think it looks just as cool, and from a performance perspective they claim it gives roughly the same performance as their old 3-blade STC.

I've never owned a Vespa, all my last 4 bikes have had well over 100hp at the rear wheel and had a top speed around the same as a M20J. as for the cool factor try this test Google search "hot girl with Mooney" then search hot girl with Vespa in the images category and tell me which is cool. As for the 150 I hope I can afford to keep flying my Mooney in retirement but I wont know until that time comes. any plane flying beats any car driving in my book.

I am not confusing "Hot" with "Cool". If we are talking hot/sexy then Yes, I would agree that Vespa's are sexy and retro chic. Any motorcycle, scooter or airplane can be sexy with a beautiful woman (beauty as defined by individual choice). Vespa's are beautiful in an Art Deco way. I get that. Cool....Not to me.

I love cars, bikes and planes. All different. All Great. I could see a fat, bald guy or gal strapping on a Mustang and he/she is "cool" to me.

Took your challenge. Many hot girls on Vespas; no photos of planes at all until adding "airplane" after Mooney, and then the only models were posing in front of other brands . . . But even then, few airplane pictures, fewer Mooney pictures.

Does that make the Vespa cooler than my Mooney? Not to me . . .

I can't believe it,,,,, not one picture of marauders girls when searching for hot girls with a Mooney..... if their not sexy I don't know what is:)

I was just pointing out that cool is often associated with context a Vespa can be very cool in the right setting but no way as cool as a Mooney

And to get back to,the post as far a esthetics a 3 blade looks and sounds cooler than a 2 blade but nothing comes close to the look of a 4 blade as it sits on a p51 or my favorite a p47

I WILL STICK WITH THE 2 BLADE!! Just was wondering what the arguments were for and against the 3 blade. Definitely looks nice in my opinion, but if it sacrifices cruise performance, I'm out! I have a little time until overhaul on the prop, just wanted to know for future reference. Thanks for the help, Mooniacs.

We just installed the new Hartzell, and we are getting book numbers for climb and cruise.  Vibration is unchanged from the old McCauley.  New prop looks cooler, and it cost less, and no ADs.  Sold.

I had a three blade on my 66E...  The gent I bought it exchanged the 2 blade prop on the  E Model with the 3 blade on his C.. Just goes to show what he thought of the 3 blade.  

 

I sold the plane because of the vibration even after prop balancing....
