Do you think if I brought a pair of Alpha harnesses to LASAR with me that they would install them for me? I think all they have are the manually adjustable shoulder harnesses there - but I'm not 100% sure?

Can't hurt to ask I'd just give them a call

The Alpha inertial reel belts end up being $816 shipped... and the fixed LASAR belts are $650. The question is am I going to enjoy the inertial reel belts $166 more?

 

I probably won't even be wearing the shoulder harness portion except for critical phases of flight...

Flown behind both shoulder harnesses. Fixed is a paid to loose or to tight especially when you need to lean forward to grab something.

But more $$$. Also in a accident the inertia is going to result in less forward lash as the inertia reel is gonna lock up at first sign of impact. If you keep the manual one loose for comfort enroute you have to tighten it for landing.

If you snug it up good for landing you should be fine.

I wear my inertia shoulder belt all in all phases it's so comfy I forget its there!

My belts come from the center of the headliner instead of the sides. Anyone else ever seen that done??

I went for the non-reel. It's tight enough back there I don't want my pax smacking their head against a giant reel climbing in and out.

Your F is "tight" in back? Don't ever look in a B, C, D or E . . . .

A full size person in the back of a short body Mooney is good...

Opinion on seat belt add-ons...

The real is worth the differential...

We get used to having the flexibility in the car with modern seat belts. Then we struggle with a fixed seat belt each time we forget they are different.

Similar to having a color screen that is not a touch screen... KLN94 GPS owners know this well. People will touch the screen until it cracks...forgetting that it is not modern technology...

My first car with an airbag was built in '92. Splurge for the extra comfort...it's OK!

A few tanks of low cost fuel will cover the difference....

If you have manual gear, you'll definitely want the inertial reel.

If not, you'll wish you did every time you have to change fuel tanks.

I put the fixed belts in my first Mooney, inertial reels in my second. Prefer the inertia reels.

The G1000 isn't a touch screen but you'd never know it watching students fly it. Can't tell you how often I've reminded students not to touch the screen. Someone has to clean all the prints off it. :)

I opted for the fixed harnesses without the inertial reel. And that's for three reasons. 1. I'm a CB. 2. Im very conscientious about every "permanent" ounce I add to my Airplane. 3. I didn't like the bulkiness of the housing. In a car, the reel mechanism is usually hidden in or affixed to the door post.

Having said all that I prefer the manual harness adjustment. I can snug up for turbulence both across my lap and chest. I don't have any problem reaching down to switch tanks either. Keep in mind the shoulder harness disconnects from the lower buckle very easily and quickly in case you need to long reach for something.

+1 on that. I similarly opted for the manual 10 years ago (I bought the Lasar kit). I've never found I wanted it the reel. In fact when I fly in cap planes that have it the lack of precision they have annoys me. I just loosen it when switch tanks. No real effort required. And more room for pax without the giant reel hanging from the ceiling.
