Every 500 hours, I have to comply with the AD on the control shafts.  I'm just coming up on doing it again.

 

I'm wondering if anyone has actually found a crack?

 

While I'm asking that question, has anyone re-chromed the control shafts?  Can this be done without making the shafts more brittle, or is this a no, no?

 

[77-17-04 MOONEY: Amendment 39-3006 as amended by Amendment 39-3258. Applies to Models M20, M20A, M20B, M20C, M20D, M20E, M20F, and M20G airplanes, certificated in all categories with over 1000 hours' time in service. 

Compliance required within the next 30 days after the effective date of this AD, unless already accomplished within the last 250 hours' time in service and thereafter at intervals not to exceed 500 hours' time in service from the last inspection. ]

I wonder if some mechanics finesse that inspection. We had the yokes off when we replaced the panel a year ago and did the inspection per the AD. The avionics shop A&P told me the inspection that was logged a couple of hundred hours earlier had likely not been done. As I recall, there was no evidence of the dye that the AD requires be used.

Any chance of moving up to a more modern set of shafts and yolks from say a J in someone's spare hanger?

The newer ones are that much nicer in feel.

That would be spiffy!  I wonder how much paperwork would be involved in that switch?  I'd probably have to re-certify the entire control system!   :o

Some people have moved the large diameters to where the small diameters used to be. The parts are expensive.

A search of the forums might expose who did it on which A/C...

And then you can join the discussion of what leather to wrap them in!

If you use the mooney drawings the only paperwork is a logbook entry. It also includes doing away with the vac button and swapping over to an electric valve and switch for the pc system.

I think I'll stick with my original control shafts.

If anyone needs a set of F model or earlier control shafts, I have a set from a 1900 hour plane that are in excellent shape.  They are the originals from my airplane before I swapped over to the Ovation yokes and shafts.  The additional problem in making the swap is that the binding bolt in the yokes are 90 degrees different in the F and earlier as compared to the J and later.  Thus, the control shafts and yokes must be changed out.  In my situation, I used parts from the Ovation and the yokes, shafts and bell crank connected to the forward end of the shafts needed to be changed.  Naturally, you need the appropriate data and paperwork filed.

No one has ever found any cracks in their control shafts?

 

What's the history of this AD?

 

I'm sure one yoke broke off somewhere. All it takes is once to get an AD out there. This is really a question for a MSC. They would be the ones that would know how frequent the cracking is.

I have just completed the control shaft AD.  I'm good for another 500 hours.

 

Surprise!  No cracks were found.

 

[To prevent failure of the control wheel shaft due to cracking with associated crack growth, accomplish the following: 

(a) Remove the RH and LH control wheels and inspect the aft two inches of the control wheel shaft for cracks (particularly at the attachment holes for the wheel). Use visual and dye penetrant inspection methods. ]

I once saw a vintage Mooney that had some sort adapter bushing to put a J yoke on a vintage shaft. (No jokes! ;) ) It seemed like the logical solution too me. Not sure about the whole STC/field approval/whatever FAA crap, but it has been done.

I heard from my A&P that the co-pilot wheel has a crack. I'll know more when I see the plane next week. If in fact this is true, where can I get another wheel? I am a newbie here. Any other forums I should know about?

What year and model Mooney? The yokes are different.
