I am considering a bar graph engine anlyzer for my M20J. I have looked at the EDM-700 and EI UBG-16 and both appears pretty much the same. On the UBG-16 the display head (2" deep) can be separated. This feature would allow installation on top of the MP gauge which has little back clearance.

Any comments or experience with either one is appreciated.

I put a 700 in my J Model several years ago and liked it very much. I am currently considering putting one of these two in my C Model, and will ve very interested in the comments. Some EI people seem to be pretty brand loyal.

I installed an EDM 700 in my C and I consider it the single best upgrade I've done to my plane. I prefer the 700 but you can't go wrong with either unit.

I used the JPI 701 for years in my Saratoga, but this time went with the Insight G3 in the Mooney... Wow would never go back.  In fact I will most likely upgrade to the G4 in a few weeks.  At my age the larger display would be helpful... LOL

I have a UBG-16 which I got as an upgrade to the USB-8 that came with my M20E 2 years ago. I've been pretty happy with it and the folks at EI, who have responded quickly to the couple of issues I ran into (a bad memory box that couldn't tell time right and a swap for ring probe vs bayonet). They are easy to talk to when you have questions. One issue that I've come to realize is that the data rate in burst mode may not be as fast as I'd like. Busch has a great vid on these monitors that you can find through his Savy Aviator site where he shows what it looks like if you've got a valve problem; little spikes about once a minute in the EGT. With the valve issues associated with our Lycomings being able to catch a valve problem early may be the biggest selling point for the engine monitor, even more than making LOP doable. There's a minimum data rate you've got to have to see these spikes well and I'd be picky about that when shopping for a new monitor. I'm still assessing if I think my UBG-16 is good enough. It doesn't seem to record the point per second rate that I remember reading for the "burst" mode in the manual but instead gets about 6 data per second.  The manual says 1-9 sec scan rate so I guess mine is set at 9. Maybe there's a DIP switch that my A&P set slower than I'd like, after all who'd want a 1 second scan rate. Otherwise I like my UBG-16 fine. I use the data dump and look at the data on the ground more than I try to use all the cute tricks you can do in the air so I don't care (much) which monitor does those the easiest or best. I added in a fuel flow which I really like and there are a bunch of channels that I might add something else.

I have a UBG-16 that came with my plane.  Recently, the display died, and it was waaaay out of warranty.  They have a max repair charge of $225, regardless of how much is needed.  In the world of aviation, that's pretty impressive.  Customer support was great, and the unit works flawlessly.  I would go with EI based on customer support alone.

My JPI 700 does three things well...

All CHTs recorded and downloadable, with effort....

All EGTs recorded and downloadable

Lean find on both LOP and ROP modes...

Getting a used one should be ultra low cost to make the most sense...

It can be connected to a Garmin and FF to provide fuel required to destination?

Seeing a G3 in another plane.... There were a few more capabilities and a comfort level of more data delivered faster....

The newer devices with high res screens are able to show all CHT and EGT data at one time. No waiting for the data to slowly scroll through.....

Best regards,

I have the edm700 in my m20e.  added oil temp, oil pressure, fuel flow.  have it connected to garmin 430 for trip statistics.  This is a nice feature!  Really like the ability to down the data and analysis.  Both units are great, I went with the JPI because I wanted 3 1/8 gauge, and JPI had a nice rebate at the time!

I recently installed a G 1 Insight in my old Mooney with EGT and CHT simultaneaous dispayed in two overlayed colums plus the numbers in white (EGT) and green CHT displayed below each column. Overall I am quite satisfied with it, but i should have taken the 3 1/8 and not the smaller size. What i I like about it is that the CHT column turns yellow over 400 F. That is a nice feature for takeoff which gets my attention faster than only numbers. The highly touted leaning feature is not so usefull as my engine starts to run rough at peak, so LOP is out of the question. However, seing the temperatures on all cylinders is quite reassuring. Also, now that I see how much the hottest cylinder changes, I really wonder what I did before with just one EGT gauge and the factory installed CHT.
Currently I am trying to teach myself to pay less attention to the EGT and rely more on the CHT ( around 380 on 2 and 4), as my grlfriend and Co-pilot rightly complained that I fiddeled toomuch with the mixture after installation of the Insight.

Hello -

Full disclosure, I work for EI  :)

The option to have a 'remote mount' head on the UBG was created specifically for Mooney owners, and we often refer to it (internally) as the 'Mooney Mod.'  The depth of the display is roughly 2" deep, which means you can install it in the far left side of the panel, where many of the M20's have a clock.  The option adds $98 to the price of the package.

Thank you!

I became aware of this option by looking at the install maual PDF. I think it should be emphasized on your website as many planes do not have the depth. I currently have an SR-8A that I am replacing with the UBG-16. It has been working fine but the LCD display started showing black stains on the top part. It is about 25 years old. Did the original SR-8A has wire terminals instead of the multipin connectors? I could not find the round connectors on mine.

I wished I knew about the new CGR-30P this Spring before I went with the 830. I have had nothing but good luck with the soon to be 20 year old fuel totalizer from them. When I re-did the right side of my panel this past annual, I removed all of the analog stuff and put in an EI tach and MP gauge to complement the totalizer. I also sent back the totalizer to have it upgraded to an LED backlight. Very reasonable (I think it was $65). They are doing it the right way -- not mud slinging their competition, providing great products and exceptional customer service. From this: ezu9y8ah.jpg To this: ebymajej.jpg

I had a UGB 16 in my C model and I was very pleased with it, lots of functions (16 as a matter of fact) can be chosen and the one display will display all of them. Customer service was great as they had patience with my stupid questions.

I decided on the UBG-16 as it was the only one that would fit on the panel right hand corner. I just flight tested it today and was very well impressed. Specially with how even my engine EGT reading is. I was able to fine lean one degree at time with rock solid reading. I painted slightly the white ring around to match the tach and the mp. I need to retouch it.

Question for Tyler Speed:

I have an old FT101 fuel flow and would like to replace it with the UBG-16 fuel flow option. But I want to use the old transducer because is a pain replacing it. The old transducer is a FlowScan 201B like this one   http://www.floscan.com/html/blue/aviation.php It has a K factor of about 30,000. Is it possible to just order the flow interface module (no transducer) and use it with the old transducer?

Today, my EI UBG-16 engine monitor died, showing no display. This is the second time it's happened. It's a pain to take it out and reinstall especially, since their engineers don't know about not using identical connectors and to make it sailor proof. I think their power supply input is not built rugged for transients spikes in the voltage. I have a JPI 700 in my Beech Debonair and it's wired to the main power bus and survives voltage surges from starters and etc. The UBG is wired to the avionics bus and should have less surges with the exception of the gear current demands. My two cents would would go with JPI-700. BTW, I used to be an instrumentation engineer for the Navy.

Jose, question for you: my UBG16 is directly in front of me right of a CDI and it gets a lot of my attention; I have considered moving it to the same place you put yours but was concerned about it being too far away to scan frequently and maybe difficult to reach the switches to cycle the screens . Has this been an issue for you?

I would agree the company is excellent for support, and Tyler has provided help to me in sorting out an issue that turned out to be loose pins on the cannon connector and even supplied me with a pin-pulling tool! Thanks Tyler ,

Joel K.
