I posted this in the Red board. Sorry if I am boring some of you.

 

 

My wife asked me what it would take to rent a plane to take 8ppl to New Orleans from San Antonio for a Fathers day meal. I told her it was too much, but I did the research anyway.

 

For a same day round trip, 8 ppl, 10am departure and 8pm departure, King Air, $14,000 to $16,000 depending on the charter company.

 

I respectfully told my wife thankyou, no.

Holy cow!! Should only be about 2.5 hours round trip in a Lear or comparable light jet. At 2.5K/ hour you should be looking at more like $6500 - $7000

Most charter companies have a 2 hour minimum per day so no problem there.

A lear for 2500 is a 25 or 35 , and you can't put 8 people in one ....maybe 3 or 4 and crew..... The least expensive way to do this trip would be a KA200 and after all the costs and add ons , thats probably over 2000 an hour....  Not familiar with the route , but a KA200 is probably 290 KTAS at 22000 feet....burning about 700 lbs  of fuel an hour, can be at 22000 feet in 16 minutes....

Alan........  I fly the Lear 35 and Lear 31 routinely and yes you can put 8 people in them!!  In fact in the Lear 31 is almost impossible to get it to gross weight.  There is a forward CG issue in it if you're going to be flying for more than 2 hours and have 8 pax onboard assuming they're all big adults.  Barring that however, it is a non issue.

 

I still fly charter and the going rate for a light Lear is $1900/hr

Alan being that the trip would only be 2.5 hours there really wouldn't be any fuel surcharges if the charter originated from a "home base" considering that we could carry enough fuel for the whole trip.  The crew is built into the hourly rate.  Landing fees would be about the only thing that would be additional in a short trip like that.  Now if the duty day was going to exceed 14 hours then they would have to pay for crew rooms so that the crew could duty off upon landing, be on rest for at least 10 hours then duty back on.

 

A trip that short surely shouldn't be more than $8K in a light jet.  Definitely not $14K.  They could get a G-V for that price!

We used to charter a new Citation about 10 years ago pretty regularly.  It was a very nice jet and always included food and open bar.  We were paying about 20K from Ohio to Alabama to pick me up and then to Texas.  We usually had 6 people on board.  Much better than Delta.

Brett, Thanks for posting those rates, that's very interesting. I would have guessed a lot higher.

 

PS. Do your pax appreciate you publishing their names and itinerary online?

I need to correct you on this; you certainly can put 8 pax plus crew on a Lear 35, and as an owner and commercial operator of one among a fleet of 7 Lears (all others 55's), I can tell you that pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the best performing, all aound go-getter light jet in the world is the mighty Lear 35.  It's a jet that you can fill the seats and full fuel and be legal to take off under all but the most extreme high temperature conditions...  Try that with a Citation (500, 550,560, 525 variants), or Beechjet (nee Hawker 400), and you'll see how limited in "performance" the other light jets are; they just simply can't under any conditions!  The only other light jet that gets close to the 35 is the wonderful Falcon 10, which has also excellent numbers but is more expensive to operate.  The rate for a 35 should be around 2850 per hour and SAT-NEW-SAT is around 2.8 hrs. block time, so make it $8 to $8.5k for the trip with some expenses.
