Hank Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 The Lasar tiedowns are not eyebolts, and carry no load rating on the side. Perhaps they can tell you. Quote
carusoam Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 They are still probably stronger than most tie down ropes... If a hurricane is coming, you will want to get your plane out of the way still. Best regards, -a- Quote
kerry Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 You should use the solid forged eyebolts, if a t storm comes by, it will unbend those eyebolts. There is a reason Mooney chose the eyebolts they did. You can get them from most high end hardware stores or McMaster Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com/#general-purpose-eyebolts/=lisnc8 These are rated at 900 Lbs of holding force, the ones you show are not rated for holding force. Not a bad idea. I think I'll do that. Quote
Alan Fox Posted February 19, 2013 Report Posted February 19, 2013 If your tie down ropes are directly under the tie downs than the factory eyes are stronger , if your tie down ropes are more than two feet outboard of your tie downs than the Lasar eyes are stronger , either way they are stronger than the ropes and the internal bracket in the wing..... jetdriven Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Those LASAR tie down ropes are quite thin metal (about 1/16"). I think in a hurricane they would saw through a rope. Chain would be OK. I am a bit for overkill so our standard tie down set is LASAR wing tie downs with 7,300# rope and our hurricane plan (aside from a NAPA valley wine tasting weekend) is the 19,000# Amsteel rope and the factory tie downs. I am pretty sure 19K would rip the threads smooth out of the wing, and if not, it would pull the spar out of the wing. Quote
carusoam Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Byron, your plane will be nicely tied down, when the yahoo from accross the ramp bumps into it. Just say'n.... -a- Quote
jetdriven Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Seriously, both planes on each side have those cheap, crappy Home Depot orange racheting tie down straps. One plane's are rusty and the orange strap is faded and ragged. Those things are only rated to 400# when new. Those planes are Cessna's BTW. Quote
carusoam Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 One of these days, I'll share the picture of the new owner's C150 with the broken tie down.... -a- Quote
AmigOne Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 A hurricane, wind and associated deluge is coming and you let your airplane sit on the ramp worrying of the tie-downs will hold up? Quote
fantom Posted February 20, 2013 Report Posted February 20, 2013 Somewhere I've got a bunch of pictures of almost 75 planes destroyed at my home drome. One hit was hurricane Wilma and the other was a tornado. Strapping your plane down well just makes it a stationary target. I was in an old cinder block + steel hanger. Not a scratch. Otherwise I'd fly out and pray I was headed away from the storm track. 1 Quote
HRM Posted March 5, 2013 Report Posted March 5, 2013 You can get the real parts from McMaster Carr for $6.50 each or from Mooney for about $60.00 each. ...but the Mooney ones are painted Quote

I'm not seeing them here. I bought some eyebolts from a hardware store and they bent while the plane was tied down on the ramp. :-( mcmaster doesn't have much selection in the "FOR LIFTING" for 1/4 x 28. Are you sure that's the correct thread pitch? Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 If I recall the mooney parts are 5/16-24 I looked in the parts manual and they don't give any clue to the thread size. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 39 posts. Impressive. Laser. The end 1 Quote
Jamie Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 lasar.com? If so, I can't find 'em. Which section of the web site? Quote
triple8s Posted March 12, 2013 Report Posted March 12, 2013 Seems like the only time I ever use tiedowns is when I stop somewhere for a short duration, if I stay overnite somewhere I almost always have it put in a hangar. I always want to be in the back of our hangar so no one touches it, even if i have a Baron to move when I fly. Am I too over protective? If I trade up how will I ever get up the courage to leave it at a strange airport on trips???? Quote
