Garmin 430 Question

Hey guys quick question for you.....does the Garmin 430 have to have the GI-106A CDI?  Or can it use others?

It can use others - eg an Aspen (and probably more too!)

It has outputs compatible to most any CDI, the GI-106A  has the annunciation built in to meet certain requirements in the install manual (distance from center, source etc. come to mind)

check the specs for signal voltage. Some older CDIs may not be supported

If I were to have the KI 209A would I need to get an annunciator panel?  My current set up is with a Apollo GX-50 and I have a annunciator panel that has two buttons....one for Nav/GPS and the other for GPS SEQ.

It has to be a non converter type. (up, down,left,right inputs)KI 206 and kni 520 are cheaper options if that is what you are looking for.  There are also some older Collens units that will work.

Yea I am trying to keep costs down and the GI-106A is pretty $$$.  I am not sure what KI I have currently installed but it is hooked up to my Nav/Com radio

I may be wrong here, bit I don't think the King 209 will work with the 430.

The one you have for gx 50 should be a non converter type. Check the 337 that was filed for the gx 50 and it should tell you which one you have

The 209 will not work since it has the internal converter. The 209a will since it has internal relays to bypass the converter

I'm pretty sure the one you have for the gx 50 will work if it includes a glideslope on the nav side  Check the model of it.

The one I have with the GX 50 just shows course....no glideslope.

The cheapest install is going to depend if you want to share the 430 indicator with a nav radio like the kx155.  If you want to share it with a nav radio like the kx155 then the 209a or 106a may be the cheapest route.  otherwise you will have to install one of the ak 950 or md 41 relay banks plus a composite to analog output converter(kn 72 if i remember correctly).  If you dont want to share it then you have some cheaper options like the ki 206 or kni 520.

you can download the GNS 430 install manual from several websites. (google search).  you can see in the instal diagrams all the indicators that can be. used.

The indicator from a collins 351 nav radio will work and is a lot cheeper than the garmin ind. Also the Mid-Continent MD200-306 CDI works very well with the 430/530,gtn650/750 and SL-30.

For my install I would have a dedicated CDI for the Garmin 430, but to save panel space I do not want an annunciator box.  The 430 would be place in the center radio stack as well so the distance issues should not be a problem.

If your wanting the cheapest CDI that will work it will be the KNI 520 probably. It has retangular movement, the only downside is that the the obs knob is in the lower right instead of lower left. Southeast did have have some overhauled ones on sale for $500 a few months ago or on ebay for under $200.  Be careful with some of the older stuff with low serial numbers, some of it requires expensive upgrades before it can be repaired.

Right now I am looking at the 209A....aircraft spruce has them on sale for 1395.00 and thats for a new one.  So thats not bad....and about 700 less than the Garmin 106....so what would I be losing if I went with this....for almost 700 there must be something I am not getting?

Does the 209A have the GPS/VOR annunciator built into it?  You may not need it in your installation, but the 106 has this.  Might explain part of the cost difference, anyway.

I dont think it does have the annunciator built in....I don't think I will need it though as the 430 has sufficient annunciations built into it.  From what I am reading if it were installed on the co-pilots side or if the throttles were in the way then the annunciator would be required.  $700 for a little light in the CDI to tell me what I already know seems excessive....
