Anyone else receive this notice? I was told over 100 Mooneys with Dukes actuator are non-airworthy. Clarification: This is if they worked on yours within a certain timeframe. No idea of the date range but the notice mentioned this is more of a paperwork issue.

Ouch!  Manual gear for the win.  Hope those with the Dukes actuator get it resolved quickly!

I didn’t receive this notice, but a similar one.  LASAR requested the steering horn they overhauled for me last March needed to go back to them as it had missed ‘an administrative step’ in their certification process.  I’m guessing possibly related to working under a new FSDO since their move to Prineville?  Fortunately, all the quality control steps were performed, and they had it turned around and shipped back to me in just one or two days.  And, fortunate for me, I hadn’t installed it in the aircraft yet as I’m still going through my nose gear rebuild.

For once, procrastination worked in my favor.

Imagine if you had already installed it. What a $hit show. Are you supposed to put it up on cinderblocks while you wait?  I’m surprised the FSDO didn’t try to find a workaround. That’s quite an imposition for something that likely has nothing to do with the physical airworthiness of the part.

It's no the same old LASAR: new owners, new location, new staff, new FSDO.

Such a sad reality...

it might be the new FSDO showing the new owners who is the boss...

I wonder if this was because they lost their PMA, didn't realize it, and didn't regain their approval until after they had cranked out some parts?

It's definitely different under the new ownership.    I suspect the new owners may not have realized they'd lose their PMA when they moved the business.

Very true, Except for Dan Riesland who is still there and has been the Parts Manager for decades and a tremendous asset to us Mooney owners.
He just didn’t move to Oregon and continues to work from Lakeport.
LASAR does add a bit more over Mooney’s recommended price but IMO Dan’s service really earns it. He probably knows more about Mooney parts than any person on the planet. And when there is much cheaper source for something other than Mooney he’ll frequently tell you and where.

They knew they would have to be re-approved under the new FSDO. I thinks it simply they underestimated the effort and had no prior experience with the process.

I don’t - cause i still talk to him regularly including today.
He is still there, as LASAR’s part manager and also still in Lakeport. He didn’t move to Oregon.
Sorry if my post above wasn’t clear.

That's good to know, then how do the rest of us get to talk to him?  The last time I had a question, I had to email some guy.

Sounds like Dan is truly awesome.  Let's hope he is training his replacement.

I thought Dan was retiring?

Just had mine jacked up and the work done to remove the gear actuator. And it has to sit on those jacks for how long? Who is liable for the labor/time of removal/install/test process?

I had my gear actuator serviced by LASAR so I wouldn't have to do this kind of stuff. 6 months later - nothing but a hassle and unnecessary expense.

When did you send it to them originally?

Nov 2023. It was returned Dec 2023 and put back in the Mooney Jan 2024.

does anyone know the what actual issue is?

No, but it sounds like LASAR failed a FSDO audit of their quality system. If they can’t produce records that show that all the steps were followed to repair each part, then there is no way to know if they were repaired properly and so the parts would be not be considered airworthy until inspected.

How do the regs work in this case?  What if you ignore the "recall" or drag your feet?  Without an AD, what enforces the action?  Insurance liability?  Audits could be a moving target.

Do you think they are they working to a repair spec?

As I understand it, only the FAA determines airworthiness and if there is no AD you are under no obligation to adhere to a recall. The recall is primarily to provide legal cover for the manufacturer in the event of an accident and subsequent lawsuit. But I’m not an attorney or an expert on airworthiness.
