I reached to the number on the website and the form but was inop. Anyone know if this group is still active. If so how do I join.

Possibly some of the people in the MAPA Safety Foundation have a current update.  So anyone going to their PPPs might be able to get an update.

For at least a couple of years now, the MAPA Safety Foundation has had nothing to do with the MAPA people that produced the magazine, etc.

Thirty years ago I couldn’t wait to get my magazine in the mail every month since I knew almost nothing about Mooneys and was anxious to learn anything I could. Eventually though it was just the same things rehashed. MAPA (the magazine, not the Safety Foundation) hasn’t really been relevant in at least the past ten years.

Yes, I know that.  But they also know all the people involved and some still have ties.  Plus it probably always comes up at the PPPs from those that don't really realize they have been separate for YEARS now.

So it wouldn't shock me that at a PPP there was someone that was "in the know" and could give an update on what's happening at MAPA.

I drive by the most recent address for MAPA in Kerrville at least once a week - no cars ever. In the past couple years I've stopped a few times to see if anyone was around, there hasn't been any time I stopped. I've left notes twice and no one has ever contacted me.

Their current homepage says that they would have magazines for Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug and Dec in 2022. They only did February and March that year. They did Apr,  May and Jun for 2023, since I imagine they had ads that businesses had paid for and it was cheaper to pay someone to do that than refund the advertisers.

I flew with Parvez Dara, the president of MooneySafety.com (formerly MAPA Safety Foundation), in January 2022 and he knows the owner of MAPA well.  At that time said over lunch he felt at that point that MAPA was done. I guess he was right. They took a viable opportunity and drove it into the ground.

I don’t agree, I think it has been a dying commodity for the past 5 years.

10 years ago, here at MooneySpace, people talked about their MAPA memberships in the same breath as their AOPA and EAA memberships.  That hasn’t been the case in the past 5 years.  MAPA has been replaced, like so many other outlets, by free stuff on the internet.

Questions about your Mooney? Go to MooneySpace for free.  Want a Mooney magazine?  Get the Mooney Flyer for free.

Trey and Lela ran a good organization, but I think they saw the handwriting on the wall and sold before it was too late.

What would be great from MAPA is online archives of the ALL the mags - a lot of great info there that would be of benefit to newer owners - like what google did with old flying mags etc…

I agree with you, Andy.  Between MooneySpace, The Mooney Flyer, and the Mooney Summit, everything they used to offer is now available somewhere else.

I disagree. I (and I think many others) would continue to pay the relatively small amount of dues to get any additional source of information about Mooneys and Mooney people. The only reason I don't "belong" to MAPA is that when I tried to renew, they were no longer around to take my money. I think that is a good thing financially, as there has been virtually no benefit from MAPA for quite some time. As others have stated, the magazine turned almost worthless quite some time ago. When the annual MAPA get-togethers ceased, I think we were all very fortunate that the Maxwells stepped forward with MooneyMax. Also thank goodness for the Mooney Summit, Mooneyspace and the Mooney Flyer.

About a year ago, the Mooney Safety Foundation ended their partnership with MAPA and partnered with The Mooney Flyer. It's been a win-win for both groups

Don,

I deleted my post above after thinking about it because it was generally negative towards MAPA and I remembered what my mother told me about not saying anything at all if I couldn’t say anything nice, but I have no idea what about it you disagreed with?   I agree with everything you typed above.  If you want to continue to “belong” to MAPA, though, out of a sense of tradition and loyalty to the Mooney community just do like I do and mail them a check. They will be happy to cash it and renew your membership.

Jim

Jim,

I gathered from you and Andy's posts (and I could easily be wrong) that you thought the reason MAPA was not functioning was because Mooney folks didn't support them because other sources gave them all the information they wanted free. Certainly no offense intended.

I took it the other way around--MAPA made themselves irrelevant and stopped functioning, losing support along the way.

Fortunately there are alternatives that didn't used to exist.

The Safety Foundation is always been legally an entirely separate entity from MAPA. However, the Safety Foundation has had ties with MAPA and has been using Leyla for years in an administrative way to help with signups and mailings of info. Leyla still supports the Safety Foundation to this day. I am not entirely sure about the status of MAPA right now and thought they had ceased to operate for awhile now.

I agree.  I like any and all sources of info.

In the Beech world, the clubs like ABS did not go away due to Beech Talk.

I tried to join MAPA spring of 2022 when I was looking to buy a plane.  Never got any answers.

Of course, Don.  No offense taken or intended, either, on my end.  Hank captured something closer to the intent of my prior post above.

OK.  Thanks, gentlemen.  I think we are all mostly on the same page about MAPA.

And I completely agree with Jim and Don as well- I really enjoyed my MAPA membership and would still be a member if they were functional. And I miss seeing Trey and Lela in person at OSH or in the offices they used to have in San Antonio.

I really like hammdo’s idea.  Scan the old magazines into PDFs and make them available for a nominal fee to download.

Support MAPA, keep it going, have a great reference tool, worth a membship! Wouldn’t need a new mag, Mooney flyers for that and, support them too!
