@GeeBee That's a "No"

More seriously, it seems that you believe that the speaker is a valid backup for a failure mode that doesn't apply to a modern audio panel.   That's fine, you can be wrong.

It also seems like you believe that a speaker is a worthwhile piece of safety/redundancy gear.   That's an opinion, and you're entitled to that.

Let's put it this way. It is so cheap, so easy, so light, so unobtrusive that if one needed it in a lost comm situation, one would feel very foolish.

Like a compass or a mechanical inclinometer (ball).   They don't put either in many new airplanes.

That's your opinion, and as I said, you are entitled to that opinion.   I don't have any thoughts or comments on if your opinion is a good one or a bad one.    Just that it is an opinion that you as an owner/pilot/operator are allowed to have.

Last I checked, every new Airbus and Boeing comes with a compass. Boeing uses Airpath, Airbus uses SIRS. And yes, every overwater flight plan includes "loss of nav" that includes a heading to fly with the compass. Your best friend when it all goes dark is a good heading.

Many airplanes don't, though.   Just like speakers.

 EricJ, you said the following in reference to a magnetic compass on January 16, 2022

"The costs in acquisition/weight/maintenance are so small that I find it hard to justify flying without one given their reliability.

The same words can be said of a speaker.

Or an inclinometer.   And very few airplanes ship with those any more, and more and more without compasses.    Speakers are in a similar boat.

You only need to be NORDO once because of a jack short to realize the value of a speaker. Because with a jack short, even an extra headset won't bail you out, nor will jacking into another jack, because they are all on the same circuit. Had one in my PA-18. Not only are you NORDO, you can't communicate with your passengers .

It's cheap, it's light and it's easy. It is not like adding another engine.

@GeeBee resurrecting this thread. Do t know if you saw my post for “comm issue” but I am pretty sure my issue started from lose pilot comm jack and I am experiencing same issue you described here. Can someone walk me through how to resolve. The Jack is now tightened back up but I still think something is grounding out because I have no audio. Speaker works fine.

In my case Anthony, I found the short right at the jack because on the PA-18 the jacks are in the wing root panel. Easy to see the dangling wire. Yours I cannot say. If you removed the jacks and the wiring was in place and secure and the jack insulators (they are the round insulators on the jack receiver) look good, then you have to go spline.
