I have velcro strips on the front of the shroud for the fuel selector and under the cabin air/heat vent.

What might them have been for?

Maybe an air deflector to direct the air to the front seat area?

I loaned my hangar to a guy a few years ago so he could do his annual. I told him to just taxi my plane to his tie down and swap planes. When I got in my plane the next time, he had put Velcro patches all over my cockpit. I asked him why he did that and he said “you didn’t have enough Velcro” I guess he thought he was doing mr a favor….

When the heat is full on and no cold air added by the vent knob, the fuel switch gets hot enough that you need something, a rag or similar, to switch tanks. It is too hot to touch if it is bare metal. I am guessing the prior pilot had something rigged up to deflect the heat over the knob. I see the knob is rubber coated at this point, but it is possible it was bare metal at one point, hence the need for a deflector of some kind until the pilot found the knob cover. That is my guess. Could have been some kind of jerry-rigged cup holder also.

OPP copy of AN380-5-3 which you can’t get in some locations.
