kerry Posted October 16, 2022 Report Posted October 16, 2022 C206 pulls up next to me at the Fallon NV airport this morning. I couldn't resist asking the pilot what's that thing mounted to the back of his plane. I thought I'd post it on Mooneyspace and see if anyone would know what it is. 1 Quote
Marauder Posted October 16, 2022 Report Posted October 16, 2022 Based on his flight profiles, I’d say he is involved in some sort aerial surveying. We had a plane doing similar profiles by me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro Quote

carusoam Posted October 17, 2022 Report Posted October 17, 2022 See if @Raptor05121 Is around… Hours spent flying survey… gets you to the next level…. Kind of looks like Brand C during mating season…. Best regards, -a- 2 Quote
M20F Posted October 17, 2022 Report Posted October 17, 2022 You are going to want to put a solid lubricant on that before you go any further. 1 Quote

Maybe Fort Knox was moved. In my neck of the woods, it’s precious mushrooms. Who would have thought there was enough money in mushrooms for some of them to own Pilatus turboprops. A64Pilot Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 I thought MAD booms only detected ferrous metals, you know like most subs? Does Gold etc have any effect on a magnetic field? Quote
carusoam Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 That sensor would be cool if it could be used to find a downed airplane… In the days before ADSB… finding a snow covered Mooney could be extra challenging in the woods… How magnetic is the steel frame in a Mooney? Best regards, -a- Quote
Pinecone Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 MAD detects the change in the magnetic field due to a mass of iron. The magnetic flux lines change. Like putting something iron/steel near your compass. 1 Quote

Had friends that flew ASW aircraft (Aurora = Canadian version of the P3 Orion etc) and commanded one of the ASW squadrons on the East Coast. Also have one niece that used to fly as a geologist. Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD) used in both applications. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 FWIW a MAD boom is a magnetometer. They are one and the same. The MAD boom is a faring that contains the magnetometer. Quote
Pinecone Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 MAD in the Navy means both the boom and the actual detector. My Dad flew ASW for about 14 years. From the TBM to AF to S-2. Quote
steingar Posted October 18, 2022 Report Posted October 18, 2022 I was going to say relief tube. 1 Quote
