It is coming up on insurance renewal time.  I have been with AOPA since inception of ownership.  I am NOT even going to bother with filling AVEMCO quote out this year as they are always WAY high in comparison (for this 538 hour VFR pilot).  Anyone heard of Pilotquote.com?  Anyone have suggestions on where I should go beyond AOPA to receive a competitive quote?

Sidenote:  Only flew 38 hours in last twelve months with 25 of that in the last 90 days...Tough to justify.  By far fewest in all my years of ownership.  Hope my partnership comes to fruition in 2012.

Check with local pilots in your area. I use a broker here in town with pretty favorable rates. At my renewal in July, Avemco was 50% higher than what my broker quoted [3 different quote amounts from 4 insurers]. If you want, send me a PM and I'll give you their contact info.

Avemco wanted $1600+ for me, with $250 deductibles; my broker found the same coverage, with 0 ded moving & parked, for $1134--it will be more without IR, but >500 hours may reduce it some, I'm not there yet, I don't know.

Scott , I got mine through Howard Frye & Associates phone number is 1-800-408-2621 and I dealt with Tom Frye..super nice people to deal with. I only had 200 hrs and no retract time and my insurance was 1330.00 year PPL only.I also have a friend who owns a mooney m20c and he bought his insurance through Falcon Ins.When I called AOPA they quoted me 1800 and it was for less coverage.

Changed my insurance broker today to Falcon for this years coverage.  They were able to get me an incredible rate and Cliff was outstanding to work with.  I increased my hull this year and am actually paying less than last year.  I highly recommend them.

ours this year was 1684$ through Falcon. Starr was the insurer.  This is 3 pilots (all with 100 make model), and 80K hull and 100k 1M total liability.   To me it seems a little high.

Mine was:

90K Hull - $857  No deductibles

Liability 1M/100K pax  $282

Total $1139

Open pilot policy included.  500 hour or better private pilot

Plus I think I get a MAPA discount.

I also just renewed with Falcon. I had them last year & this year my rate went down 10% while I increased my hull value 10k. I did need to get them to negotiate a bit with the underwriter as they would not give me a discount for MAPA PPP even though I took it twice in 2011 & I had more time  in model. It pays to ask as opposed to just accepting the rate.

OK so is all Falcon Insurance the same, or does the broker matter? Our agent quit last year and we got another one assigned to us.  Frankly, I'm not impressed.  The underwriter said "make and model" was "M20J" and the refused to accept our partner's instructor's many hours in an M20F.

I renewed in December with AOPA (Agency) and Global Aerospace.  Annual premium is $1294.00  My hull value is $65k.  $250 motion $50 not deductibles.  $1M & 100k Liability.  This was competitive with other quotes I had received.  I will likely be adding a pilot mid-policy period and Global is more likely to allow this per information I received.  Good luck with your renewal Byron.

I use SkySmith as my broker, on the suggestion of one of my neighbors. Very friendly folks.  When I first got my Mooney, I had 0 time in complex aircraft and was a fairly low time (<300 hrs), VFR only pilot.  To complicate matters, I also live on a grass strip.  Most agencies wouldn't cover me with those factors.  Skysmith was able to shop it around and find at least one that would cover me.  My first year's insurance was about $3200 for 1M/100k on $125k hull value.

Fast forward a year, and Skysmith was able to get me 4 quotes (up from the 1 from the year before).  In the meantime, I got 20 hours dual for transition, part of which was also used to get my instrument ticket.  I also flew 140 hours that year.  Grass strip still applied.  Best quote was now $1600 for same coverage.  I decided to go to $1M smooth, same hull value and that raised it to $2000/year.

I've been very happy with them in terms of finding me a good deal, or finding coverage when most agencies wouldn't touch my situation.
