Mooney Folks:

Has anybody installed the AMsafe airbags in the front seats of their Mooney? I have an earlier Ovation (prior to them being standard equipment) and was wondering if there might be experience here on install costs and feedback if you have? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

There has been a lot of interest in the airbag technology...

Some people that may have some knowledge, insight, or something to add... people that have discussed installing the system in the past.... from potential user, installer, and supplier...

@Pmaxwell

@aviatoreb

Getting out of the wreckage starts with surviving the initial impact...

expect the cost to be in the single digit AMUs... instal costs are not very large... installing seat belts and a control box...

Best regards,

I was on the website and thought I saw something like 2.5 AMU's for the front set - I'll verify with them directly. If that is the case, the next questions (maybe somebody can help with are):

- installation costs and does it require specialization?

- Periodic maintenance of sensors and repacks (or whatever that might entail)

-  wearing comfort? are they bulky and uncomfortable or any other reason users may not like them?

Thanks all.

Yup!  I had Amsafe installed.  2 years ago? Planning on not needing it knock on wood. But I have had airbags pop on my when driving and good thing walked away with just bruising and not worse.  I am a big believer in airbags.  I was campaigning for them w amsafe as of10 years ago and bought as soon Ästhet became available for our airplanes.

Thanks,

Mark, plan on 4K to 5k installed...give or take.  Also keep in mind the added costs of regular inspections at annual and higher costs at other less-frequent intervals.  I flew with them in both newer Ovations and Acclaims and found them to be comfortable.

I was told by AMSAFE that Don and Paul Maxwell were working with them on install procedures from Mooneys.  That was at OSH 2018.  Maybe @Pmaxwellcan give an install time/cost extimate.

Hey there is some history to go with all of this...

unfortunately, it isn’t very updated...

Best regards,

I had mine installed at Weber aircraft.  It was the first of the SOARS AmSafe they had installed in a Mooney (or any aircraft - but they are a Mooney service center with a floor full of Mooneys from all around the east coast).  It took them much longer than the promised 1.5 hrs per seat.  I cannot remember exactly but I want to say something like 8 or 10 actual hours and whatever it was they said that since they were learning on my aircraft they knocked a few hours off the actual install for the charged hours.  I really like that shop.

And I enjoyed the seatbelts again today...

Am Safe product delivery sucks.  We end up buying some parts from Cirrus when Am Safe has delivery issues, which is every time we order.  Even test box recertifications are slow.
