Hi Everyone, I dropped my J off for the new panel upgrade.  I know what's going on the left side (g3x, g5, 750, etc).  I'm curious what the largest tablet size I can get for the right side of the radio stack.   I'd like to have the guardian mount for the Ipad mini but I'm concerned it will fit.  Has anyone done this?  Or dare I even ask about the larger iPads?

If the mini doesn't fit then I'd go with the iphone 11 pro max...but no guardian mount exists and after calling they said they don't have any committed timeframe for anything other than what's on their website.

Thoughts?

I would never put an iThingy in the panel and I wouldn't buy an airplane that had one.  Why install a widget in the panel that's going to be obsolete in just aa few years?  You can put a phone or a iPad mini on a ram mount on the yoke.

The mini should fit fine in your panel. It will work great for additional information or a second set of instruments for entertaining the copilot. The mini 5 just came out and it’s 5 times more powerful vs the previous generation (and probably 20x more powerful than the g3x)...it’ll last for a long time. Have the shop paint up a blank panel to replace it down the road if necessary.

so this will rule my plane out for you then but of course I'm not selling...if I change the iphone/ipad/android tablet form factor down the road, I'll just re-cut the opening to fit the size of the next guardian or air gizmo...not like I'm making a life long commitment here lol

An iPad way over to the right pointed straight ahead isn't much use. If you can put in on a mount and angle it that would be better.  It's still more useful on the yoke.

I agree...this might be used more for the copilot to click around and play with than for me...we'll see.  May even end up just playing a movie depending on who's in the seat.

perfect advice thanks!  I was hoping for the mini or larger.  I'll definitely have the spare blank done so it will be super easy to replace DTR.

Your panel is probably similar to @Rmag ...

I couldn't tell how much work they had done to wedge that thing in.  Looks sweet for sure.  It just doesn't look like that would fit in mine.  Here's what mine looks like.  The Century IIb autopilot, 155, and panel light knobs are either being moved removed--actually they are all 3 being replaced.

I won't be the the only one.  I wouldn't install a hand held anything in the panel.  The technology just changes too quickly.  Easy enough to put it on a mount and power it off the ship.  It's bad enough that our panel mount avionics go through cycles of obsolescence.  That, and when you hook it into ship's power (or install it in the panel) you might wind up running afoul of a zealous regulatory type.  I steer way clear of kludged together avionics.

But it is your ship and your money.

With CAD tools a new panel is a lot easier to fabricate now.   A nice <1 AMU tablet seems a great upgrade for the copilot side.   Here’s an iPad Pro doing a fine job in a “temporary” panel mount.

Sure it will look obsolete in 5 years.  So will  your KLN89 & Narco MK12D.

g3x, EIS, 750, 430W, G5, 345r, remote audio panel,  GFC500, panel mount entertainment and tertiary redundant device = the new definition of Kludgey...

I'd love to see a pic of your non-kludgey panel.  I'm confident I'd have a long line of people happy with my panel.  Ironically, whenever I post on Mooneyspace I always wonder what ridiculous comment someone will try to call out.  Yours wins the trophy so far.

For something that can be changed out easily you can always use velcro. I have an 8" tablet over on the right side in the big blank space. It is more for the person in the right seat as I have a 10" on the left yoke but I glance over at it too. Some of this heavy duty stuff from Homedepot or Lowes works well.

I have a case for the tablet that just stays there and I pop the tablet in and out but I could just pull the whole thing off if I wanted to. By putting double thickness velcro on the right side of it the tablet is angled a little towards me.

Cool idea.  Thanks Skates!

I’m pretty happy with a ram ball mount on the right side.  In my opinion it gives you lots of options - iPad size, orientation, angle, etc.  it’s also easy to remove, and it’s close to the cig lighter for power if required.  It may also give you a bigger iPad in less panel space.  It’s not obtrusive to the copilot at all as it stays pretty close to the panel.

It gives you a really simple upgrade path too as technology changes, and if someone doesn’t like an iPad mounted there, it pops off in about 10”.

Pictured is an old mini.

Are you keeping the kt74? Or going Garmin for integration?

I don't think it would look too obsolete.  I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between the various iPads by looking at the screens alone.

Going with the remote 345. Controlled by the g3x or 750 as I understand it.

Summarizing a few things...

1) portable iPads make great back-up and entertainment screens... more and bigger is always better...

2) portable Garmin devices look near like an actual panel mounted device.... and often are easily integrated to share feeds from other Big G devices... and their ability to continue running is a tad better than an I-device... usually.

3) Running out of space for things looks like a challenge that is becoming more popular... include in your plan to future proof things... remote mounted transponders or audio panels...

4) Doing the color screen count is pretty interesting... looks like five is a popular count...  CSC = 5.  :)

PP thoughts only...

Best regards,

I have the 10.6" iPad on a RAM ball joint in portrait orientation for approach plates.

Approach plates that far away and out of immediate scan wouldn't work for me. But an iPad Mini on the yoke works great. Plus both seats are usually occupied with 2 pilots.

Many times the panel light control is put just left of the copilot yoke shaft. I think you will have plenty of vertical space if that is moved. The mini in the dock is a standard 6.25 inches wide so it’ll side right in to the avionics stack.

ok, thanks for the tip  I'm swapping out the panel light controls with modern versions so I'll make sure they move them lower.  -Kris

Totally agree.  Right now my plates are on a 696 that is slaved to the 430W.  I've thoroughly enjoyed this setup for 10 years.  I'm still deciding where to put them.  They won't be on the ipad mini in front of the co-pilot.  I know that for sure.  -Kris

I have a Mini 4 that I found fits perfectly between the yoke horns on its side and the perfect angle and stays there (in cruise anyways).  I've routed a power cord from a USB adapter at the cigarette lighter to then follow to the yoke.  Everything is pretty well out of the way, easily accessible and readable as it sits.  Nothing is used but friction to hold it in place.  You could use some velcro or the like if needed I'm sure.

I had a RAM mount on the right hand side, about where you're looking at panel mounting.  I was actually thinking the same thing myself.  But, i found that when i wanted to really look at the charts, especially during approaches, i'd be pulling it out of the RAM to place it in my lap.
