London is still pretty far from the ocean but is tidal.   something like 50-60 miles.  LM is a tad further, like the odd thousand as the water flies.

See, you too could wading in the River Thames and have a shark bite off your leg.

Layers is how we do security.   406 ELT will stop transmitting when the plane goes under.    An EPIRB will start transmitting when it hits the water or you pop it.   A VHF  handheld which can be had for $20 will give you someone to talk to.   I would have all three.   for a cheap place to hang out.   Cause it would be awesome to see the rescuers face when they came to get you.   Please take pictures.

In a recent (last 60 days) Atlantic rescue of a disabled Grumman flying boat, the initial distress call was via Inmarsat telephone call.

News Article

They were at speed while taking off about 400 miles offshore and hit something in the water.  At impact the cockpit flooded and none of the panel radios survived the drenching.

All 5 crew ok.    The plane sank eventually.

Their Ditch Bag radio was a key survival item.

The ResQLink+ I have will do the same thing. No  I cant talk to them, but here's the deal. You open the unit and turn it on. If it works, you live. If it doesn't, you die. Get a real life-saving device.  Those PLB's are waterproof, they float,  and can be clipped to your life vest.  The US Air Force has your position about 60 seconds after you turn it on. They call the 3 numbers, and then they dispatch assets to your rescue.

Get all the phones, VHF handhelds (which always are dead when needed), Marine Band DCS VHF's, and SPOT's you want. But a real waterproof 406 PLB is the last thing to keep you alive.  Don't trust that to consumer grade electronics.
