I have heard that the LASAR 201 windshield mod is not available now either, but has anyone approached them with regards to using a factory replacement 201 winshield with their mod? I suspect in both the case of SWTA and LASAR, the answer is no mostly because of the oppressing, ever present government regulation of their STCs and legal liability, not because of any technical reasons.

I am sooooo glad I already have the mod. I seriously looked at a number of planes before this one that I had factored in a 201 windshield conversion. At the time I had no idea that this mod would be gone for good. I consider myself lucky on that one! I have no idea what will happen should I decide to change the windshield now though. Mine does have a big blemmish on it where somebody in the past got some solvent on it and it melted. I also plan to change all my green glass to the smoked ND type when I repaint someday. Hope I can.

I heard the reason the LARAR mod is not available is due to J model cowl decks that are no longer available from the factory.  The guy I talked to said that once Mooney starts making parts again that the mod will be available too.

What needs to happen is Mooney needs to start making planes again.....I just dont understand how a company that makes such an awesome product can't stay in business.....Cessna and Piper make nice planes and all but nothing like a Mooney....Its heartbreaking.

If I can find a salvage J or even a C with the  mod parts, can I get the original 201 windshield and have the install done by my A&P without an STC?  I'm thinking not, but not an expert on the topic.  I'm relatively sure you can replace the plexiglass in your plane under normal conditions, but does this qualify?

Guys:

LP Aero Plastics sells the 201 windshield. In fact, they even sold the STC for the 1/4" thick version.  That was sold for Mod Works so it may not be an option anymore now that Mods Works is no longer.  I think LASAR still sells the STC but they may have difficulty getting cowl decks (which is a factory part for their STC).  I have a 201 cowl deck that could be used if anyone is interested in it.  In any case, there is plenty of data out there for this conversion which a DER use to approve modifications for a single installation.  You can e-mail me at johnabreda@yahoo.com if you would like more information.
