Hi All!

I just committed to purchasing a 1977 M20J and I am excited to join the community.   I'm going to be flying it across the country in a few weeks from PA to CA.  I have read about as much as I can find about expected performance, but I was wondering if anyone had a POH for a '77 J to help in the fuel planning.

Thanks!

Well let me be the first to say congratulations !!!

I have enjoyed my 1977 J for ten years now, and I wish you that and many more. I feel like I made such a great choice that I bought 2 aircraft at once... My first and my last.

I am sure you can find examples of J model POH online with a Google search. I tend to fly at Peak EGT or slightly LOP anywhere from 8K to 12K over the appalachian mountains.  I plan for 10gph and 150 KTS at 2500 RPM and WOT for most flights. 155KTS if I want to go ROP around 8K.

Thanks a lot.  Its great to be here.  I'm trying to determine which route to fly her home, north or south.  Its all going to depend on the weather when the time comes.

Welcome to the group!  You'll love your Mooney and a long flight from PA to CA will really help speed that process.  Make sure you get a check out and some transition training.  I'm in MD.  If you'd like my help getting familiar with the plane before setting off cross country, let me know.  Happy to provide you some instruction and transition training for free.

So update, I just got the pre-sale inspection results back and everything looks great and the deal is on.  Unfortunately because of work, I cant go and pick up the plane until August 19th.  GeorgePerry was very kind in coming to show me the ropes, however he is not available on that date.  Is there anyone in the Pennsylvania / New Jersey area that is around that Friday for an hour or so to show me the systems.  I have about 900 hours in high performance aircraft, but having someone with experience with the airframe is always a good to have.

Kelty -- where are you exactly located? I am based in southern PA outside of the Philly area. I am a long time owner of a 75F which shares a lot of the same systems as a 77J. I also have a good chunk of time in a 77J.

If you are nearby me, I could spend some time with you to get you up to speed.

Kelty,

Congratulations.  The M20J is a terrific plane.  Where are you going to base it? We have a great group of Mooney owners all over California. I'm at KSQL, just south of SFO. Moved here from DC four months ago.

Flash,

It's going to be based in Hanford, KHJO.  I know KSQL well, I used to fly into there a lot during my PPL training out of KWVI.  Next time theres a CA Mooney meetup, let me know and I'll be there.

Flash,

That's a GREAT airport.  It's perfect to get in/out of SFO if needed.  And certainly a perfect place to pick up family flying in/out of SFO.  I have a Bravo and I am located in Santa Rosa (KSTS).

I think Charles Schulz/Santa Rosa is fun, with all the Peanuts characters and a fine restaurant, too.

Will do, Kelty. Don't know when the next such gathering will occur. There are a bunch of Mooney Caravan members here, too, so if you want to do some formation flying you can do that here, in NorCal or SoCal or both.
