I think the 390 should be the same cost to maintain but check the cylinder price. You will want to understand the cost of the jugs going into it....

I have been on the hunt for a good Mooney for a few months now.  I have owned a J-Model in the past and cannot give up my love affair with the Mooney.  I have a purchase pending on a mid-time M20F with elec. gear that the previous owner did not fly much.  Put a 0 SNEW  IO-390 and a new Harzell 3-blade.  Of all the talk about the 390, does anyone have actual performance and cost (fuel and maintenance) experience with this upgrade.  I love the -360 but wondering if I'm walking into a nightmare here. Thanks

The only thing I have heard about the 390s is the higher cost for the cylinders. There are a few of them around, hopefully someone will chime in with real experience with the 390.

Thats not true mine was bought with the one piece mod.

"Often" but not "always" a one-piece belly on a plane that wasn't born with it equates to a GU landing. I WISH my plane had the mod but I'm not willing to slide it down the concrete to get one. And at $11,000 installed (according to LASAR) I'd opt for an avionics upgrade instead. If my money tree ever blooms I'll buy a glass panel, Lo-Presti cowl, AND the belly mod!

Still as many have said before a properly-repaired GU shouldn't exclude a plane from consideration but I still believe it negatively affects the price (for the seller).

Thomas,

As a fairly recent first time owner, I must tell you you are doing some right things. Asking for input from experienced Mooney owners and reading up on the subject. I learned of MooneySpace several months after we purchased from a fellow Mooney owner who is also a co-worker. So I did most of the things recommended below all on my own ... after years of research ...

I wonder:

1) Have  you purchased an aircraft before? Have you read about common high cost items like ... a suspect engine do to long periods without use, leaky fuel tanks, corrosion, old avionics, interior, paint ... not just when, but where was an engine rebuilt ... and so on ...

2) Have you studied high cost items unique to Mooneys? Bent nose wheel steering upper truss. ADs replacing old insulation type that retains moisture near the steel tubular frame, landing gear shock discs ...

3) are you definitely having a pre-buy inspection performed by a Mooney knowledgeable shop.

There are many discussions here on these topics.

I'm still a rookie, but I can tell you all the photos in the world can not tell you what you learn when you see a plane firsthand and see the logs.

I imagine, and rightly so, you are simply trying to narrow down the field. Understandably, you can't travel to see every Mooney, you've got to determine if it's worth the trip ....

(forgive me if you've already covered this and I missed it)

David,

This will be my first airplane purchase. I have been looking now for over a year, I guess I'm a bit slow at this. I have read up all that I can, and realize that I still have lots to learn. A PPI at an MSC is a MUST for me, no deal without. I have also "hired" Mike Elliot to look over any prospective airplane i come across. Hopefully something will pan out soon, getting a it discouraged.

Angelos -- if you find a plane in a certain area, look for members in that area to see if we know the plane. I recently helped a prospective buyer with a Mooney. Someone contacted me about a plane near me. I didn't know the plane but I knew someone on the field who did. They knew the owner was selling after their second prop strike, including one where they just dealt with the prop.

You will find that people who come to MooneySpace are Mooney lovers and we genuinely care about the stewardship of these birds. If we can help in your buying process, let us know.
