Guess since it's veteran's day, I'm a 38 yr old Major, U.S. Army.  Although I think I did find my first grey hair....does that qualify....Tongue outWink

I am a civilian but in light of it being Veterans day please accept my gratitude and thanks for your service.... and heck, some envy too. I am young but this year realized I was now too old to at least apply for an ANG pilot slot, something I'd thought about here and there over the years.

Civilian also, and think every day is Veteran's Day!  Thanks to those of y'all out there serving now, and those before you as well.


Back in 2000 I was real close to joining my local B-1 ANG unit as soon as they started granting waivers for eye surgery.  I took the tests, had the app together, etc. and went for my surgery consult...long story short the eye doc said the chances of bad side effects might be as high as 1 in 10 for me with the PRK procedure (only option for air crew) so I declined.  :(

We call it Remembrance Day in Canada.  Everyone wears a paper poppy on their jackets from 1 November to 11 November.  The poppies are distributed by the Royal Canadian Legion (veterans organisation).  Ceremonies in almost every village, town and city from coast to coast such that the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is opened with a moment of silence. The poppy comes from LCol John McCrae's poem: In Flanders Fields.


I spent 22 years in the Canadian Signal Corps and I was lucky enough to bring all of mine home.  I have friends who commanded that were not so fortunate.  We, who have worn uniforms do not normally weep for those who have passed, but for the ones they left behind. 


Except today. 


Today we remember them.

In Belgium and France 11 November"Wapenstilstand" Armistice..the end of the first World WAr. Everybody get's a holiday.


Still very important and educated in all schools for very good reason never to forget.....
