I usual do my own oil changes but I have on occasion paid the mechanic to do it.  Oil and labor was somewhere in the $300 range.  A little more  than I thought it should be but I paid it.

I paid over $600 for a front tire and tube but I was away form home and it was done in about 1.5 hours after it went flat on a Saturday afternoon.

I figure it should be 1.5 billlable hrs in a shop that has other work to do (while they are waiting for your oil to drain).

of course if you're standing there waiting, then it's 3 hrs.

I do my own except for annual.

Carl,

From the fuzzy memory department...

Look for a small aluminum cylinder mounted high on the interior side of the firewall.  It is under the access panel on the pilot's side. Refilling the container is a challenge to not spill excess red fluid on the interior rug.

You may be able to see it by looking up from the floor.

Best regards,

With respect to oil changes....here in Georgia, a while back autogas was pushing $4 a gallon and W100 climbed to almost $7/qt at Aircraft Spruce.

Back when I was paying $1/gallon for car gas, I was paying about $1.60/gallon for avgas.  A case of W100 was about $23, or $2/qt.

Now that car gas has fallen to about $2/gallon and 100LL is available at less than $4/gallon, it seems like W100 ought to be less than $4/qt now, but it's still about $7.

It isn't the mechanics who are making big money on our oil changes.

Well it does say CB question.    I would not know how much to change the oil on the truck since I do that myself.   oil and filter from wally world. Take me less time than driving it somewhere.  I am on the edge of switching to walmart brand lubricants  I would be $2.00 that they are produced at the same packager as the name brand stuff.

First time to do the plane seemed to take about 1.5 hours.   Not sure why everyone wants to wait for the last drop.  There is still about a quart in the oil cooler.  If you buy your w100 oil from Sam's Club it is about $5.5 a quart.

Bob,

Just a fun question, Where is your hydraulic reservoir ? Do you have any pictures?

I can't seem to locate mine.

carl

my A&P pulled one spark plug , tested it ,cleaned it , tested it , reinstalled it . in 12 minutes , charged me 12 dollars. then sat i my hangar for two hours talking about airplanes. I dropped off a case of beer the next day.

Mine is mounted pilot side at the top of the firewall on the cabin side. But since I have a 201 windshield and the avionics assess cowl panels are gone the fill fitting and overflow tube are plumbed through to the engine side of the firewall. The top cowl has to be off to top it off.

Excuse me, Mr. Sabremech. I was not joking. And must apologize most humbly for asking an illogical question. I asked it not to amuse or offend or to invite snide repartee and ridicule, but because I had no idea of the answer. I was merely, inappropriately and illogically astonished to learn that an oil change without complication or extra work, cost ~ $225. I have relatively little interest in doing the job myself, and the non-pilot man in my life has less than I do.  The mechanic supplied the oil filter, cut the old one and inspected it.Replaced a small screw on the air filter. I supplied the oil I bought last time I was somewhere that sold it by the case. I am not permitted to get in his way or assist in any fashion. He does it when he gets around to it. It took three days from cowl off to cowl on. I will eventually get around to kitty-littering my hangar floor. And yes, he really does own two Corvettes, one beautiful antique Jaguar, a perfectly splendid 42-foot sailboat, a Harley, five fine and amazing old airplanes in various stages of repair, wonderful toys I do not begrudge him in the least.  As far as I know, he has neither wife nor children, lives in the hangar when it suits him, and doesn't spend a fortune, shall we say, on clothes. Very good, competent, kind fellow, and I do like him, but I merely wondered what the going rate was. Now, thanks to some much appreciated Mooniacs who are willing to cut a poor confused grandmama (who probably shouldn't be allowed the keys to a bike lock, much less a Mooney) a teensy bit of slack, I know now that his expertise may be just a little on the high side. What I eventually do with that information, thank y'all all very much, is still under consideration.

Of what relevance are his Corvettes, Jaguar, sailboat, Harley and airplanes? Or if he is married, has kids, where he lives or what clothes he likes?

What do these things have to do with your oil change?

How about the fact he charges 240$ of labor for an oil change on a 231, which is probably how he affords such a lifestyle. She can choose to or not to support that.

It's all in her last two sentences. Well, those plus his prices.

Do you ever comparison shop for your purchases? Or do you blindly support other business owners and gladly pay whatever their asking price is? Or do you only want your clients to do that for you? Nothing personal, it's just how your attitude is coming across here in Webland . . .

Our. lifestyles are admittedly our own business; I begrudge my mechanic not. I've always been willing to pay a little more to support local folk. It helps keep this very small town prosperous. Somebody accused me of lying, though, when I jokingly referred to enabling his many hobbies, and that does offend me. I merely conjectured how he manages to afford his toys, to which I contribute so generously. I did think his oil change price was high, thus a little informal comparison shopping here. So very sorry to have stirred up such a major tempest in such a minor teapot. I hope those upon whose toes I have trodden will manage to get over it.

Amelia has "relatively little interest in doing the job" herself. Yet she has a huge intetest in complaining about paying a mechanic to do it for her! And because the gentleman likes his toys, she insinuates, he must be overcharging his customers!

I got it!

I got news for you Amelia. Weather or not you pay the extremely reasonable $225 for your oil change he'll take his Harley for a spin while your oil drains! And he doesn't need your or anybody's permission!

My experience has been that there those who change their oil and those who never will.  Mechanics price for the later because they know they can get it.  If you have a filter and a quick drain it is about the fastest and easiest thing you can do on your own plane.  If you don't want to, expect to pay accordingly.  All good either way in my book.

You're welcome Amelia, sweetheart!

But I must tell you, there you go again! Like that mechanic's toys, my manners are none of your concern!

Concentrate on things that concern you instead, like getting a deal to your liking on your oil change.

IF you look on the Sams website you will see that some stores carry Aeroshell 100 and 15-50W

You're going to tell her to concentrate on things that concern her . . . and then you're going to make the posts you do . .  that's one of the most hilarious things I've read recently.

I don't like to see my fellow Mooneyspace people insult each other and fight.

Try to answer questions online as if you were in the hangar with them.  Do so with respect and understanding.

I also would balk at a $235 bill for an oil change.  I would ask the mechanic before the service for a written estimate or at least a verbal estimate.  If I didn't like the price I would ask for clarification and possibly take it somewhere else for service.
