Isn't there one buried in the G1000 somewhere?

The G1000 manual says it shows "engine time," which would be hobbs time. Next time I go to my hangar I'll compare what it says to the one in the baggage compartment.

Which brings up another question: Why is the hobbs meter in the baggage compartment?

I've always wondered why they put it back there myself.  I can't think of a good reason.

I'm installing an EDM-900 and removed all of my old engine instrumentation, including the recording mechanical tach.  I'm installing a Hobbs meter at the old tach location and using an airspeed switch to make it record flight time only.  I don't trust the EDM recording function over the long run... having a mechanical recorder that can be viewed without going through a menu is my preference.

I think the Hobbs got relegated to baggage area because their was no room up front.  I have seen Hobbs mounted on console in the foot well area and they are really hard to read.

Joe,

I have a G1000 Ovation. Based on my observation the TIS clock time is clearly less than the time elapsed/HOBBS time.

Even if it isn't called Tach it sure seems like it is. Now, i may mis-remember but as I recall the meter in the luggage bay shows the same time delta as the TIS which means it would show Tach?.

On your next flight you can compare (I'll try and remember to do the same) the TIS, meter and "time elapsed from engine start to engine shutoff" (aux page).

Joe, the Engine Time on the Engine page is the closest thing you'll have to Tach time.  Didn't you recently do the 310hp upgrade?  Were you not required to put in a supplemental tachometer as part of that upgrade? I know that was required for the Ovation 3 instrumentation.  I have a separate EI tach so that's what I use for tach time, although it's syncs up pretty nicely to the Engine Time on the G1000.

The 310hp requires an upgrade to the tachometer to handle the updated 2700rpm redline.

The older planes handle this by sending out the original tach to get it's red line rescreened.

The POH does a pretty good job of explaining the details of each installation and how it works.

The G1000 has been a bear to update anything. Adding a separate tach was probably the best alternative.

The older Os have an oil pressure switch attached to a clock.

Putting the clock in the back keeps the finance administer at bay and lowers the stress on the pilot who sees the time running out like an hour glass...

My thoughts,

Joe and Robert, I'm curious what version of G1000 software you've got.  I am running system version 0401.30, which I believe is the last version that would support the S-TEC 55X A/P.  But recently when they were swapping in a new MFD they remastered the software entirely and one thing in particular changed.  When climbing with a target altitude selected, I used to get a "bong" at 1000' before altitude, and then one at 200' before altitude (and one at 200' after altitude in cased you weren't paying attention!).  Now I only get the bong at 1000' before and 200' after.  This is consistent with what the manual says should happen, but my system page says I was running 0401.30 both before and after.

A little mystery I'm trying to clear up. I haven't called Garmin yet...I suppose that should be my first step.

Today I went to the hangar and compared the engine time on the ENGINE page of the G1000 to the Hobbs meter in the back. The G1000 said 435 hours and the Hobbs meter said 431.5 hours. I wasn't aware of any engine data on the AUX pages... I'll check those next time.

Robert C.: What is TIS time and where is it displayed?

Thanks, everyone.

That's a bit interesting, as usually Hobbs shows more time than engine time. But sometimes they have RPM thresholds that are programmed into the tach so that it doesn't start ticking, or at least not at 100%, until a certain level.  I'm not sure if/how these Mooneys are set up for that.

From a '99 O's POH....

25. HOUR METER

Hour meter - located in baggage compartment bulkhead and indicates elapsed time while engine is running. Location may vary depending on installed systems.

@Joe: had a chance to fly yesterday as my Ovation just came out of Annual :)

Found that the Tach meter (installed with the O3 upgrade) and TIS (Time in Service) from the G1000 and the meter in the baggage compartment all show the same time elapsed. Which was about .8 hrs while I timed engine start to shutdown at 1.2 hrs (time in the pattern and low-and-slow flying to calilbrate the AoA indicator).

One oddity is that the baggage compartment meter has 10 more hours on it than the TIS or Tach ??

So by my understanding of what a Hobbs meter is...I don't have one in my Ovation. The only aircraft system that shows engine on till shutdown time is on the G1000 Aux page, sub page timers. And that one of course resets as it is a timer.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Sorry Jeff, forgot to check that yesterday but believe it is the 0401.3 and I seem to recall it getting the bong at 200ft before. My MFD has never been replaced or upgraded.

That all should happen when Mooney finally gets its test flight act together and gets our set-up certified for WAAS and ADSB.

I have the hour meter in the baggage compartment that reads 100+ greater than my tach time on the G-1000 but what's the 310 STC tach meter you speak of?  I got the STC this year but no third meter.

It's not a meter - it's an adjustment to the tachometer on the engine page to raise the redline from 2,500rpm to 2,700rpm.

Mine actually comes with a new Tach meter in the dash board. Its the kind with a digital window and the little lights around the edge, which of course goes to 2700. A button allows you to cycle between seeing rpm and Tach time on the unit.

Robert,

Does your G-1000 tach read 2700?  My frame type on the G-1000 was reset to Ovation 3 and the tach image changed.  I did not know about the separate meter.

Thanks,

Russ

Yep, the G1000 display goes to 2700. My recollection is that the STC requires a separate Tach meter to be installed, but I don't have it handy to check.

I had the Digital rpm gauge (w/analog display) adjusted to meet the STC requirements.  Looks original with a proper new redline.

Quirky old O, with digital reliability on analog displays.

Who wouldn't pay extra for that?
