Cwalsh7997 Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Hey guys here's my situation, I'll be flying me and my friend to Oshkosh this year from Stuart,Fl (KSUA) in my M20F. I wanted your guys opinions on a few things... 1) What stops would you guys suggest on the way and 1 or two stops? 2)I wanted to possibly fly at 15000ft as I see on foreflight it cuts off a good amount of time? And if that's what you guys suggest which oxygen system is recommended for two people? 3) And finally any other tips you guys can give regarding weather, time of flight, as well as routes. Your input is appreciated please?? Quote

Your input is appreciated please?? 1) Not to familiar with the routing from Florida, but look for someplace with cheap fuel with about an hour of remaining fuel. 2) 15,000 feet going northwest? Depends on the prevailing winds on the day of flight. Also, depends on whether or not you have oxygen with you. 3) Fly early morning and plan on waiting out weather if it happens. Hopefully you have an ADS-B in device with you to help check weather enroute. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
wiguy Posted June 26, 2015 Report Posted June 26, 2015 Yes, check winds aloft a few days prior(while checking wx) and look for the best altitude. I'd look for a fuel stop with nice facilities and price in the TN/KY area. Air-Nav and other sources are helpful. If you need a good fuel stop prior to Oshkosh, KBUU SE of MKE is a nice place, usually lowest fuel in the area. Quote
PaulB Posted June 27, 2015 Report Posted June 27, 2015 My routine when planning long cross countries like this it to use foreflight and just put the direct route in first. Next I look at the MOAs if going IFR on a weekday and route around those. Also look at restricted/prohibited areas. Flying out of Florida towards the Midwest you may need to look at the airspace around Pensacola. After doing all this I find the spot on this route that would put me with about an hour of fuel left and then pull up the 100LL prices in Foreflight. I start looking for the cheapest fuel. I then break the route up and save the individual segments as favorites. Rinse and repeat until you're at your destination. To me, planning is half the fun. Foreflight can also help you pick the best cruising altitude but I usually wait to do this until the morning of the flight to get the most up to day winds aloft. 1 Quote
Mcoyne34 Posted June 27, 2015 Report Posted June 27, 2015 Not much to add, I work at BNA and there's an airport about 15 miles east of Nashville with cheap fuel. The identifier is M54. Quote
Mcoyne34 Posted June 27, 2015 Report Posted June 27, 2015 That's usually where the flight school fuels up Quote
DrBill Posted June 28, 2015 Report Posted June 28, 2015 When I went 2 years ago, the winds were best at 5000 up and 7500 back. fueled up N of Indy on the way up and W of Cinci on the way back. Used AIRNAV to find the cheapest gas. I didn't want to fly over the lake so we went around the S side of Chicago. All IFR. Bill Quote
FoxMike Posted June 28, 2015 Report Posted June 28, 2015 I would bet that 15K will put you into a pretty good wind going up, coming back may be worthwhile. Â Do not go above 12K unless you have Ox. Â You will likely be crossing lots of MOAs in the southeast part of the country. Â Better look at potential hot MOAs before you start thinking about altitudes. Â Are you going IFR and/or doing this in one day. Â With a fuel stop you are looking at a 9 hour day. Â You need to plan your arrival time with show time if you are arriving on Monday or later. Â KOSH closes before dark so it is only open for a short time after the show. Â If you do it in one day take chow with you as you won't have time at fuel stop to have lunch. Â You will gain one hour. Â Look at AirNav for best fuel stops. Study the KOSH NOTAM it contains lots of things to know and do. Â Good Luck! Quote

Mcoyne34 Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 Would you prefer Lebanon over Smyna or Tune or BNA for a 2 day visit to downtown Nashville? Fuel, tie down, car rental, etc.? JWN is perfect for downtown access but it's closed for another month or 2. Lengthening the runway. MQY is a nice airport and maybe 25 minutes to downtown, fuel is reasonable, cars to rent, not sure about ramp space right now due to JWN closing and planes relocating to MQY. I'd call the FBO there first. M54 is about 25-30 minutes to downtown, but may be harder to find a rental car??? Not sure. Plenty of ramp space. Gas is slightly cheaper than MQY. MBT is a good option about 35 minutes to downtown. Gas is about 40 cents cheaper than MQY. Plenty of ramp space. Not sure about rental cars. Can be very busy with MTSU flight school. Looks like a beehive on radar scope at work. BNA is 10 minutes to downtown at most. Gas is nearing $8 a gallon. Plenty of ramp space and rental cars. Having said all that, I'd park at either MBT or M54. Uber or cab to downtown. If I'm available, I'll pick you up from airport and drop you off downtown if you show me your plane.... If you need any suggestions for food, I can help with that. Lots of good food in Nashville. 1 Quote

We used to do touch and goes at M54. I don't  think JWN existed, at least I don't remember it. I'd be happy to meet you and show you my old M20E. If we do come over it will be kind of spur of the moment Thursday/Friday a conference at Lipscomb U. I'll check with Lebanon about rental cars, we'll probably want to do some exploring. 1 Quote

Bill just about guaranteed you will get KELSI RFD then direct coming in from the south. Enjoy the western Il. tour! Now some folks have been known to file to Aurora with KOSH as an alternate, then request the alternate when the time is appropriate.... Quote
Bob_Belville Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 Will a loaded F cruise at 15K? I'm curious as to why one would want to go to 15000 traveling N/S east of the Rockies in a NA plane. In over 3000 hours I can count on one hand the times I went above 11000 and that would have been to grab some winter tail wind from Chicago to NC. Perhaps with a Rajay... 1 Quote
Marauder Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 Will a loaded F cruise at 15K? Not well. I think once he sees how long it will take to get there, he will be back to the ideal levels for an F. I like to fly in the 9,000 to 10,000 altitudes. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

Bob_Belville Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 FlightAware seems to have only one flight for N10CH. November 15 from MN to OH. 4 hours; 150kts; @ 3500 and 5500'. Perhaps a previous owner. Quote

carl Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 My max personal  altitude in my E is 7000. It will go higher  My max duration is 1.5 hr  This is a great expansion of my personal envelope from my old Grumman which had a functional ceiling of 6000 ( it won't climb past that)  If the July 4th weekend is good I going to push that envelope a bit .  I am not ready for Oshkosh yet.  carl Quote
