cnoe Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 CNOE: Looks interesting. How about a brand, model number, price, etc . Thanks They mostly look the same. Mike's is silver colored and mine was white. I paid $29.49 + $6.50 shipping 'cause the seller had a better rating. It took about 2 weeks to arrive. My exact device can be located by putting the Ebay item number 171668136701 into Google. It's the first thing that pops up. And hats off to kmyfm20s for posting his pics and device description earlier. Cnoe Quote
PTK Posted March 10, 2015 Report Posted March 10, 2015 All intraoral camera electronics are made either by Sony or Panasonic. They're all good quality in that regard. The difference is the imaging technology. For superior image quality a CCD camera is preferable over CMOS. Also auto-focus is a nice convenience as are wireless and video capabilities. I'd recommend spending a little more and get the better quality CCD along with higher megapixels. Andy95W Posted March 11, 2015 Report Posted March 11, 2015 Hmm... $29 vs. $89 vs. $139 vs. $154... $29 it is! Cheap B@$tard winner! 2 Quote

Strong analytical thinking like this certainly puts you into the lead for the Cheap Bast$&d of the month award. Your recognition gift for winning one of these awards? NOTHING! We're too cheap to give anything out. But it's the thought that counts. 2 Quote
RobertGary1 Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 Ive got a Harbor Freight camera but I don't see how I could get it down the spark plug hole and do a 180 with it to look back up at the valves. Similar question with the dental camera. Am I missing something obvious? -Robert Quote
kmyfm20s Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 The dental camera is at a 90 deg angle to the wand. The spark plug holes are angled as well so between the 2 you can position the camera to see the valve faces as seen in the above images. Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted March 13, 2015 Author Report Posted March 13, 2015 I can see that the 90 degree intra oral cameras with led array will do a great job on the valve faces and piston top. How do they do in inspecting cylinder walls particularly for scratches and the ridge that forms at the top of ring travel. Quote
N601RX Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 Harbor freight has some new bore scopes now that have a .335 diameter camera on the end. The older one like I have has a much larger diameter. I think they still sell both. Quote

The dental cameras are "primarily" good for verifying exhaust valve integrity. It's a pretty good bet that you won't lose a valve in the 50 hours between oil changes if they look okay at each inspection. While you can see "part" of the cylinder with one of these there is no way to manipulate it to see the entire bore circumference. But then cylinder wall condition is an unlikely cause of catastrophic engine failure. Cnoe 1 Quote
Hank Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 There are many options available, right up to ones like this. Can you convince your boss that you need one like it at work? It costs as much as a new O-360, I'm afraid to borrow it to check my valves. The little bugger is very flexible! Quote
RobertGary1 Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 The local community college has an A&P program and occasionally I've been able to beg/borrow stuff like this from them. -Robert Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted March 14, 2015 Author Report Posted March 14, 2015 As I said when I began this, I determined that the Harbor Freight items would not turn to view the valves and being based on fiber optic bundle technology, probably had poor resolution. I agree that cylinder walls are not very important compared to valve faces. I think the intra-oral is the way to go. I will look carefully to see if I am willing to pay extra for the CCD versions. My intent is to use the camera (particularly on valve faces) at each annual, or indication, not at regular oil change. Thanks to everyone for the input, I think I have what I need. Quote
