kerry Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 I bought a nexus 7 tablet and installed Avare. Not bad for free. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ds.avare&hl=en Quote
Bob_Belville Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 Tried it on an Android phone? I'm not getting GPS on Droid - Verizon. Quote
Yetti Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 I have been using the Aviloution apps on my samsung III and Acer tablet. The work really well. Instant look at the weather around the state. Can do the flight planning and then take it to the plane. They also have file through DUATS. The flight tracking is fun to download once you get home. Also pretty good GPS on the Samsung. I am still working on getting the ADSB going. I would be interested in the AVARE features Quote
Mcstealth Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 I have almost pulled the trigger on a Nexus 7 several times. Please put up your experiences. Do you have IPad experience also? Would be great if you had a direct comparison. Thanks David Quote
kerry Posted September 5, 2013 Author Report Posted September 5, 2013 I have the 1st gen Ipad. I like it but I can't upgrade maps because my operation system is to old and can't be upgraded. I found the nexus 7- 32GB on newegg for $169. My guess would be the ipad cost $600-$700 range. I like the size of it and the image is much sharper(comepared to the 1st gen ipad). Has a GPS in it and battery life is long. I was comparing garmin vs. navigator app, but I came across avare for free and it works great for my needs. Quote
DrBill Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 I have a VIZIO andtoid tablet running NAVIATOR and I love it. Severla others have the NEXUS 7 and if I break my Vizio, I'll get the Nexus. A LOT cheaper solution than APPLE. BILL Quote
Hank Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 I have Avare on my Galaxy tablet and phone, but no iPad comparison. It's wonderful for preflight planning but I keep either packing it in the cargo bay or forgetting to turn it on. Neither of these are an issue with the G430W. Quote
DrBill Posted September 21, 2013 Report Posted September 21, 2013 I installed Avare on my Vizio and it is GREAT. Used it today on my PNP flight (5.4 hrs) VERY responsive and no problems at all. BILL Quote

Would be great if you had a direct comparison. Thanks David I have an iPad 2, iPhone 5 and a Nexus 7. I like the Apple iOS better for using the apps but you can't beat the Nexus as a dedicated in flight tool. The screen is brighter than the iPad (and the brand new Nexus 7 model has an HD display). I run Garmin Pilot on the iPad and the Nexus. The iOS version is always a little bit ahead of the Android version. Garmin uses separate development teams. I also run ForeFlight on the iPad and the iPhone. ForeFlight does not run on the Android platform. The best part of the Nexus is the price. You get a built in GPS without the need for the cellular version and it is about half the price of the Apple mini. Quote
kerry Posted September 23, 2013 Author Report Posted September 23, 2013 I just used my nexus 7 this weekend on it 1st cross country flight and I'm very impressed. No glare on the screen. Very sharp picture unlike my ipad has. I had 2 hand held gps's units with me and they both lost GPS signals along the nellis range(area 51) but the nexus never lost its gps signal. Perfect size for the cockpit. Quote
