chrisk Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 I had an email in my inbox this morning pointing to a M20J. I'm not in the market, but I am curious if anybody knows this bird. Looks like it has not had much use in the last 3 years and older avionics. http://aircraftownershipsolutions.com/ad.php?t=N201NZ Quote
rbridges Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 don't know the plane. it looks like it got a teardown inspection in 2010, but I don't know how reliable those are for forecasting future problems. The price is a little unsettling (kinda low for a low time J). It looks like a somewhat basic panel but it does have an AP. Quote
aaronk25 Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 Your gonna drop 25k on that panel getting it upgraded. Radios old, no Ide GPS ECT. Also 10 hours in past 3 years, plane on a min of 10k expense to take engine off, open case and replacing the cam. So 59.9k plus 35k =94.9k. Which is exactly what I did with my 77j. Bought it for 54k then added the above plus 8.5k fuel tank reseal an windows ECT. I got about 100k in my 1977j I bought 2 years ago for 54k. Would I do it again, yep, but would first look around to see what 75k and 85k would bring. If you could live with everything else as is make sure you put some money (10k) aside for when you have to open the case to deal with lifter/cam issues due to lack of use. Quote
aaronk25 Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 One other thought is a great time to have bought that plane was immediately after gear up, as the parts inside the case would have been in good shape and it would have got new oil seals too! Quote
mike_elliott Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 It looks like it has been sitting quite a bit, probably not the best way to treat a IO360 camshaft. Quote
gregwatts Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 This particular broker seems to search out planes that have not flown. Many of their aircraft have 20 yr old overhauls with few hours flown. I have never done business with the broker but I have looked at a few of their planes and they all have they same thing in common........low time SMOH done many years ago. Quote
Jeff_S Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Did I see an oleo strut on the nose gear of that thing? I was flipping through the pictures from the link and my eye caught on something that surely looks like an oleo strut on the nose gear...was that a feature of some early J models? Quote
chrisk Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 I think it is a nose gear shimmy damper. You can see it in the drawing for SB 202. http://www.mooney.com/images/pdfs/sb-pdf/sbm20-202.pdf Quote
kmyfm20s Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 How did it get the back windows with the rounded corners? Quote
orionflt Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 It was a dampner for the nose gear, but mooney removed it I thought there was a SI or SB saying it was ok to remove but i can't find it. most mooneys that had them originally installed have removed them. brian Quote
Jeff_S Posted August 7, 2013 Report Posted August 7, 2013 How did it get the back windows with the rounded corners? I have seen a few of those. People just put opaque rounded-corner inserts to simulate the rounded windows. Quote

Rookie Posted May 25, 2016 Report Posted May 25, 2016 Any one have any contact or association with N201NZ? It's for sale again, I need see it sat for a while. But the guy that has it now says he flies it weekly. Tail number must be blocked, don't see no new flights. Quote

KSMooniac Posted May 25, 2016 Report Posted May 25, 2016 And in my observation VFR flights with FF aren't showing up at all in 2016. Quote

I am not sure why the change, but the last flight shown for me was on November 1, 2015 and I have had no fewer than a dozen flights since that date with flight following (Miami, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Mobile, Orlando, Jackson (MS) to name a few) Quote

I think it might be related to whether or not the controller you initiated the flight following took the time to enter your destination in the system. If the next controller asks me where I am going, I am pretty sure it wasn't entered. It also might be a change with FlightAware itself. Quote

I am not sure the reasons for the change, but it is a shame that VFR traffic is no longer tracked. It was a valuable tool for many reasons: 1) Family could track you and know you are safe; 2) Self-critique of flight; 3) External cross-reference for transponder reporting (Mode C), ground speed and rate of climb. I used it extensively when I was in the market for a J to verify the owners' claimed speeds. It seems that everyone has a 160 KT J model when it is time to sale. 1 Quote
wishboneash Posted May 25, 2016 Report Posted May 25, 2016 I am guessing if you enter a VFR flight plan and then cancel it or not even activate it, you will be on Flightaware. Quote
Jim Peace Posted May 26, 2016 Report Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) My experience is if you file an IFR flight plan and then not activate it,,,,just get VFR flight following you will show up on flightaware about 90+% of the time..... Edited May 26, 2016 by Jim Peace Quote
