MY GARMIN 530 WAAS SHUT DOWN AT AUSTIN EXECUTIVE LAST WEEK. HELP!   I GOT A GREEN LIGHT FROM EXECUTIVE TOWER AND GOT IT BACK TO HOUSTON.  THEN THE RADIO STARTED WORKING AGAIN.  I DID NOTICE THAT A BLACK HORSE SHOE SHAPED RING ABOUT 1/8 INCHES WIDE APPEARED ON THE SCREEN. IT HAS NOT GONE AWAY. CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND AN AVIONICS SHOP IN TEXAS PREFERABLY CLOSE TO HOUSTON? CAN THIS 530 BE REPAIRED OR IS TIME FOR A NEW ONE?  THIS GARMIN 530 IS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD.

As I understand it, If the display goes bad, those are not able to be repaired. You may want to look into doing the avidyne ifd540 slide in replacement.

I would contact jake bevan.  They can do some repairs.  Also, I think those have an internal fan?

@Avionics Source might be the right user name?

Buy or borrow a hand held radio to get you home?

You’re fortunate if you can transmit to the person sitting next to you in the cockpit with a handheld. On most of them you can receive a little but transmitting from inside the cockpit without being hooked up to an external antenna  is not going to help much.

Even though his profile says M20R, @Beau  has an M20M, all of which had two COM radios from the factory. @Beau doesn’t say whether he tried that.
